On Monday, the NWS and SPC both issued severe thunderstorm warnings for the Tri-State region for the following day on Tuesday. This week started off with a very strong and unpleasant heat wave that saw some portions of New Jersey topping out at 100° degrees or higher heat index. On Monday, a very powerful severe weather system had affected portions of the midwest, which included a rare derecho event that brought powerful winds and even some tornadoes to the Chicago region before continuing it's way east across the Great Lakes region and entering Upstate New York.
This evening, a large, very powerful system (which is thought to be from the larger system that was responsible for the derecho event in the Midwest) made its way southeast into New Jersey from far northeastern Pennsylvania and brought with it very heavy downpours, strong winds, flooding in some low lying areas and very powerful lightning that was mostly intracloud and very constant. This line continued southeast, affecting lower Middlesex county, as well as the Jersey Shore regions of Monmouth and Ocean counties before moving out to sea and eventually dissipating. This was one of three previous but less severe thunderstorms that affected the region. The high heat and humidity combined with the convection left behind by the two previous storms enabled this final system to become severe and provide a good show. This was one of the best severe thunderstorms that I've seen since last year. It's one for the books.
