$20 Goes A Long Way...
This is a Daytron RCS-7020, I don't know the exact year but I'm certain it's from the 1980's, also made in Korea!
This model was sold under various other names and brands:
Grundig PC-5022
Clever RCS-7020
Magnasonic CPS-907
This is the only one I've seen on sale on eBay, and I bought this when I didn't really know anything about boomboxes, I just thought it looked cool and it was super cheap.
It's in very decent shape however it's not without its issues. For one when I plugged it in it wouldn't output any sound at all! I later found this out to be user error (stupidly!) as I was plugging in the speakers (which are detachable!) to the phono/aux inputs, so of course they're not going to work that way. It's quite rare for such a small and cheaper boombox to not only have detachable speakers, but also an aux input, so I figured there was no way this thing had a line in. It's quite fully featured for being so small, and one thing I can say it is extremely powerful and loud. This amp is way overkill for these tiny speakers.
The tuner also needed to be looked at, as when you turned the knob the knob would keep turning however the tuning needle would stay relatively in the same position, it was simply stuck. Another issue was that the "phono" button was stuck down.
Thirdly the cassette player did spin however it did not sound good and I replaced the belts in there as well. After that I tuned the motor to spin at the correct speed and it ended up sounding great.
Upon cleaning the sliders and switches I ended up accidentally breaking the left channel slider, so I had to take it apart and figure out how to fix it. Thankfully I was able to do this as one of the only real downsides of vintage gear is that for a lot of these knobs and switches it's very hard to get replacement parts unless you've found another unit to pull working things from.
I have a whole slew of boomboxes to show you guys with a lot of mods and upgrades in the future, so stay tuned!
Thanks for watching!
