He was 53 years old when he did this concert in Bercy, Paris in 2004. Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... The First Farewell" Tour and this particular concert in Bercy started with an amazing "Drums, Drums & More Drums" track performed by Phil and his other drummer, the previously mentioned Mr. Thompson. Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. Phil had the energy he had in this song all the way through to the end of the concert (as did his musicians). Now that he can no longer drum, his son NIcholas plays drums almost as well as the old man did--literally--Phil is 70 now. His son is on the Domino tour with Genesis currently. Oh and of course, his daughter Lily is rapidly becoming a famous actress in her own right. So, he's still doing alright I suppose (tongue in cheek).

It was a very dramatic piece indeed, derived from the events that led to a divorce. Phil Collins was originally the drummer for Genesis. Whe the lead singer Peter Gabriel left the group to pursue a solo career, they held auditions for lead singer. After several months of failing to find anyone the found satisfactory, Collins said I can do better than those people. He stepped up and became their lead singer. The “gated reverb” sound, which became the drum sound of the 80’s, was found by accident while Phil was Playing on Peter Gabriel’s third album on the track “No self Control”. The producer Hugh Padgeham, put the sound of Phil drumming through the sound desk monitor and through a filter and got this amazing sound. Gabriel had put a rule on the drummers that worked on that album, including Phil, “No cymbals, just drums”. Have a listen to the track “No self control”. The drum break is even more impressive than this one.

Phil Collins was the drummer for the group Genesis. Peter Gabriel was the lead singer and he went solo. Nobody knew that Phil could write or sing the way that he did. He is credited with being one of the best (top five) drummers in the history of American music!

No he's not. Universal top 5. Peart , Portnoy , Bonham , G Baker , B Rich. Phil is ok , if anything overrated . He isn't considered in anyone who is actually a drummer to even be top 100 .

@@johnmilner5485 If anything Phil is underrated. He's so known for his singing, very few people realize what an exceptional drummer he is. Not only the amazing parts he did with 70s Genesis, but his work with Band X, the first solo Hackett album, and his work with countless lesser known projects. I'm a drummer and he's been a massive influence on me. Completely underrated.

This was the song I was jamming to when I almost lost my life in a car wreck. Despite that, still love this song to this very day.

In the 70’s he was the drummer for Genesis When Peter Gabriel left and went solo, Phil took over singing and playing drums. Both went on to have amazing careers!

Amazing careers indeed. If Peter Gabriel is on the list of your artists to react to, you two should check out Sledgehammer. I remember the video being super cool as a kid.

Phil wrote this song is like half an hour, afire with his anger and disillusionment with his wife, who he had caught in the act with another. Pure fire and thunder flowed.

Whenever I hear Phil Collins it makes me think of my friend Clarance who worked with me at a pizza shop in B’More. We had so much fun at that job (we were high 99% of the time) and Clarence was mad for Phil Collins. Like low key obsessed. We’d fight over music bc the rest of us would go on Phil Collins strikes and he’d tell us he’d quit washing dishes if we turned it off. He usually won bc if you’ve ever worked in a kitchen you know how critical having your sht washed is.

Brad, you might remember hearing part of this in the movie "the hangover". Mike Tyson does air drums, and knocks the one guy out. Phil Collins is a musical genius. This song is like one dramatic build-up for the drum fill, and that powerful outro. Excellent choice here.

This performance made my hair stand on end with its power and intensity. It felt almost as if he was in such agony at the end that he had to jump onto the drums to physically beat it out. I remember this song from the eighties and really liked it, but never truly understood what it was about until I watched this performance.

Unfortunately, Phil can't play the drums anymore and recently he has had to sit down the sing through his concerts. His health is rapidly declining. He left such a huge mark on the music we listen to so it hits hard to see him like that.
