Thank you Phil, I am new and certainly learned a great deal just from this one video. This is One of the rarest video that talks about the 'Plane's which helps me a great deal.

Glad to have come across this video from a FFI MCI -- lots of great pointers for teaching new casters

Owen, Thanks for the comment. In my current teaching I refer to principles 1 and 3 as variables and 2 and 4 as constants. Principles remain the same!

@@philgay3511 That makes a lot of sense to categorize them as variable or constant principles. (And I wouldn't have been able to resist delivering to that splashy rise at 34:06)

I love this video and your valued instruction. Thank you. When you say to practise at "25 ft" do you mean 25 ft of line out of the rod tip plus the leader of 9 ft to make 34 ft, or does the 25 ft include the leader, making it 16 ft of line out of the rod tip?

David, 25 feet of line out side the rod tip!

My season opened April 15th and this will be my 3rd season fly fishing. I used the tips in two of your videos and can finally say that I'm actually 'casting' my line. I also now can feel feedback in my rod for the first time. Many, many thx for the effort you put into making these vids and for sharing your experience.

David, I am glad I have been able to help. Take a look at the reach cast in the Presentation video. It is an extremely important cast that has many uses!

Why has casting instructions need to be so extensive? No wonder it is considered difficult...

It is not that difficult but it does require understanding certain basic principles!

@@philgay3511 I know but maybe that's what we are chasing too much. For beginner to even intermediate casters it could be shrunk to just a few pointers. For instance the dreaded 'straight line path' (which is not what happens by the way) is negligible for short casts up to 20-25 ft with small casting arcs. Knowing this the whole 'instruction' could be very compact & simple

My casting instruction as well as my casting is very compact. I don’t discuss rod tip path much but the reality is that in good casting the tip path is a straight line with all the flexes Ann unflexes! If it is in a convex path you get wide loops and if it goes in a concave path you get tailing loops. I agree that on short casts much of this is in the margin of error. However not everyone fishes at 20-25 feet.

Thank you Paul. Lots of great stuff in the Presentation Casts! A number of those casts I just made up while trying to solve a presentation on the river!
