1. Warm up - scales (~ 10minutes, focus on good sound, maybe in the keys of the pieces you're playing) and studies/technique 2. Make a list of goals for day of practice 3. Use a timer (to keep track of how long you practice) 4. Schedule Breaks (and time them) 5. Stretch after practice

I do 10 min of scales, 10 min of Klengel speed exercises, about 30 minutes of Dotzauer Etudes. The rest of the time on the most difficult passages of repertoire. I practice 1 to 1 1/2 hrs per day--I'm not a professional, not even close. Other than church, I have no place to play where I live. I had been thinking about a list like yours. That's a great idea. The timer is a wonderful idea. Muchas gracias por tus ideas & recomendaciones!

Excellent ideas Jorge. The Timer for me works like this. If I schedule 10 minutes on vibrato, I expect to get $10 worth of value out of the time spent; 15 min on arpeggios, $15 R.I.O. For me, I personally hate Etudes because they are not especially musical and too predictable pattern-wise. Instead I take chamber music cello part excerpts and work on those challenging passages picked at random: Mendelssohn & Beethoven especially problematical. But Mozart too but for entirely different reasons. And for sure, I also time those sessions: 10-15 minutes for each composer. Bonus benefit: when you actually come to play the Trios, Quartets & Quintets with others you've already fingered your part!

Nice Look Inside your Practice habits. I love doing Scales. It gives me a good orientation and mapping of my cello. I also do some Trill-Exercise, Double Stops, Vibrato Training, some Bow-Technique: Whole/ half bow ,Tip/frog, lifting some Fingers (1+2;2+3, 3+4 ,1+4 lifted) for Warm-Up. Not everything everyday. I choose two or three things of my Warm-Ups.

Muchas gracias Pablo! Espero acompañarte prontamente en Leipzig.

I always made my students a customized practice “diet.” That way they saw it as something that was a way of life and necessary to not get out of shape. Plus diets change over the years. What’s good for you when you’re young doesn’t work when you are younger. Sometimes you get out of shape and need more cardio. Sometimes you’re injured and need to work on something else for a while and eat differently. Music is no different. Also, having a customized plan that slowly involves the student more in the choices allows the student to have a framework to take over that task for themselves one day.

Bravo for all your work.. I have seen there is not a tutorial about how to use the back muscles in production of sound and not to stress the trapezius. I think your esperience and precious clarity about this could really help many cellist that use too much pression. And very strange is that many big teacher don’t clarify this important passage. Thanks for your answer

I’m 15 yrs old and I practice 3 to 5 hrs a day. I usually do 1 hour of scales and bow/right hand exercises, 1 hour of etudes and caprices and then 2 hrs for my concerto and Sonata (I play Saint-Saens concerto and Brahms sonata so i need more time to focus on them)

Okay, but, do you practice your scales with vibrato?? My teacher always prohibits me that.
@SammieMousie
4 жыл бұрын
What? Why? I always practice like he stated. Eight notes, quarter notes, half notes, then whole notes. When I do the whole notes I practice my virbrato. I really wonder why your teacher prohibited it.
@lou.isliving
4 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you want to work on that moment. When you want to work in you intonation you shouldn't do it with vibrato because you're not hearing the pure sound of the note. After practicing "normal scales", then you can add another session of scales with vibrato to work specifically on it.

Luego descanso 10 min y otra hora. Asi 4/5 al dia. Y me ayuda mucho a optimizar el trabajo. Un saludo 😊.

Hola!

Does anyone have experience with using color to mark sheet music? Do you find it helpful or unnecessary?
@FlaviusIgnatKeys

I used to do that, especially in chamber music but then I realised that is better to "mark" everything into my head. Everything will be more clear and natural.
