Upward picking works for John McLaughlin, Al Dimeola and many others. They're both useful. I've noticed when I use upward picking you get muting for free, whereas it's not the same with downward picking. Good luck. It's great once you've cracked it, [not that I have, but I've had glimpses.Back to the woodshed.].

Believe it or not, there are a lot of parallels between that slant picking & clawhammer banjo. Much less an up & down motion. More of an in & out motion, a motion your Mom is very familiar with.

I had been playing guitar for over 30 years when I found Troy Grady's videos. I realized that I was an upwards pick slanter most of the time, but it isn't very pronounced. I have some nerve damage, so I learned to economy pick as much as possible. Even notes per string give me fits. I've been trying to practice the downwards pickslanting style to rebuild my alternate picking speed, but it feels really unnatural to me. It's really annoying because I'm also having to work to resist economy picking everything.

Indeed Grady’s contributions (and yours) have been game changing. What’s really valuable here is the exaggerated movement approach. I beat myself up over trying to be economical when getting around to practicing, but emphasizing the motion is liberating. I’ll be focusing more on that. 👌🏻🤘🏻

Dimebag Darrell must have been a super hard downward pickslant player as well. Maybe that makes sense to why he starts on upstrokes on unexpected riffs and he almost always doubles the licks everytime he would only play 3 on a string.

Great picking vid as usual Uncle Ben! I'd love to see a vid tackling the picking on Ghost's Griftwood solo. At least as most people tab it, it has 9 note sequences in 3nps across two strings...I have had to work on economy to pick it...and it's probably how Akesson is doing it...but would be curious to see if you could find a way to pull it off alt picked entirely, for those of us who are almost strict alt pickers.

Hey Uncle Ben, weird question. I love your stuff (and Troy's!) but I have a hard time understanding how these complex technical death metal riffs "use" pickslanting. Most of the riffs I hear don't seem to follow any kind of picking patterns and all these "rules" don't work. How can someone play complex stuff while respecting a specific picking pattern? I'm an intermediate player (duh), can't seem to get speed on these mixed patterns

Hi Ben . Hope you're doing well . Hoping for your opinion . What do you think of a Guitarist using strictly the Economy Picking Technique ? I've tried so hard to overcome the difficulties of getting good at Alternate Picking but I just can't get it to work for me as well as Economy Picking . Please tell me what you think about this . I think I know the answer but I would thank the rest of you for input also . I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe . 🎸

None of them help me because i am apparently brain dead when it comes to learning the guitar. I just suck at it, and i suck at it aggressively, despite my best efforts. one thing i dont get about fast picking is how hard youre supposed to actually pick. if i pick hard, i sound like shit and flub notes, and if i pick soft, the technique is better but it doesnt sound right tonally. seems like good shredders pick soft, but it sounds like they pick hard, and im not sure whats actually going on.
@BenEller
Жыл бұрын
Lots of factors, and lots of answers. Jason Richardson picks HARD! So does Ian Thornley. But a lot of times, lighter gauge strings “bottoming out” can make it sound like you’re picking with more force than you actually are.

@@BenEller it always reminds me of how Meshuggah pick a lot of their riffs much lighter than youd think but it sounds so fat. easier at slower speeds though. i needa practice... thanks for the videos
@BenEller
Жыл бұрын
@@JunkieMonkey321 yeah exactly. And Meshuggah has always used REALLY light strings. Destroy Erase Improve and Chaosphere were both recorded on 25.5 scale 7 strings tuned down a half step, and if I recall they were using like a .52 for that low Bb. When the tension is that light, you HAVE to control your picking and hit a little lighter.

@BenEller Do you have a video where you cover the actual pick hand with downward pick slanting? Like, I know it's natural for you, but for some of this is still seems like voodoo. When I try and rotate my wrist to achieve the downward pick slant angle, I lose all the strength out of my hand and wrist. I cannot gain any accuracy or speed. I have to be doing something wrong somewhere along the arm/wrist/fingers but I can't figure it out.
