Thankyou for the help ! I was told to practice 2 5 1 cords and scales to help with these jazz standards like blue bossa and I noticed some of the dom7 cords dont stick to the original key you started in.for example on blue bossa on alto im in the key of C or Amin and the 4th cord played is E7 with the melody note played during that cord is G natural so i was getting a little confused . but I guess you can play a g# and a g natural over that cord since your in A min.

I'm assuming you play the alto sax------------- One of the scale choices for that E7 would be an altered-scale that corresponds with E7(+9, +5) ; that would include the G (concert Bb). I'd recommend asking your sax teacher, and also listening and figuring out what Joe Henderson and Kenny Dorham do during that measure during the solos. You can't go wrong with imitating Kenny and Joe. Cheers--- IAN

Can I ask how can you play duet on saxophone so if I play a song how does someone play duet with me and how does he know what to press

wouldn't the dom7th be d7?

Yes, D7 would be the dominant 7th that corresponds with GMaj. I was just playing one random example of each scale type; the fact that I did both GMaj7 and Amin7 was a coincidence. I wasn't necessarily trying to stick to the key-center of G (although that's a great way to practice). Thanks for watching and keep blowing!

I have always found it confusing when when people talk about playing chords on a saxophone. My understanding is a chord is a comination of notes played similtaniously and the notes of the chord played in succession are called apeggios.Perhaps I got it wrong but this has confused me for a long time and has restricted my progress in this area.So are we playing chords here or appegios? please clarify for me .Thanks Ed

Danny Mac they're arpeggios. It is possible to play multiple tones at once but most music does not require it. The purpose of practicing the arpeggios is for improvisation. If you know the chord tones well enough then it will allow you to play with more musical ideas rather than just spouting whatever bullshit you can pull from a scale.

Messiah - try listening to some of your favorite saxophone players to see how they combine scales and chords (and different shapes) in their solos. A great example would be John Coltrane or Sonny Stitt. Happy practicing!
