So good to see your painted papers become so much more. Sunburst, Landscape and Penguin Friends. Please forgive my naming of your pieces - these are the names they received in my head while watching. ☺ Landscape is my favourite. Are we allowed to have favourites? It definitely speaks to me the most of the three. I can see where you are coming from with the water soluble chalk when you say sexy. It adds so much depth and definition and changes it up so many levels to something else that you can't get just by adding painted papers and paint. So fun to watch you create. Thank you for sharing this with us. I always look forward to your videos. I hope you are well. I hope you get to enjoy your Easter weekend to the fullest :). 🐤🥚🎁🎉 Oh and love n hugs to Archie. @PaintedPaperStudio
5 ай бұрын
Hi Kreativ! Some papers work better in collage if you wet them first. The moisture expands the paper fibers so that the paper lays flat when gluing down. It can reduce wrinkles in collage. The other reason is some of the papers will go transparent when gluing them down. I prefer to get those papers wet first to help them become more transparent. Does this help? If you want to see my experiment with translucent & transparent papers here’s the link: kzitem.info/news/bejne/x2iF3GSqnoaFjKg Thank you so much for asking such a great question. 🥰

Hurray! A Jackie-Easter-Sunday-Video And what a colorful journey indeed! Before I forget: I love the third piece, the "unbalanced" one. I think of two penguinelike beings and how the big one and the small one both look in the same direction and make me curious to see, what will appear from there. I just had to save them with a screen shot, to go on loving them for the case, that you will cover them up (weep). I love this video and of course I looked up the artist you mentioned: Mark Kessler. I am just at a point, where the teachings of both of you are extremely helpful with a painting that made me get stuck. Thank you so much dear Jackie for showing and sharing your process. I LOVED this video!! I was literally getting a little nervous bc I didn’t know where you were going, but actually told myself, “trust the process” a few times. 😂 As the layers were being built, I was smiling bc they were all turning out so beautifully & I loved the creative freedom this process gave! I’m an overthinker & I have become creatively paralyzed bc I’m afraid to “lose” some of my favorite papers in something that I don’t end up loving. Needing to get it right the first time has held me back from exploring & growing, but bc I’ve seen your process & how BEAUTIFULLY they turned out (even before they’re “done”, I have a new confidence to try this myself!! This was soooo helpful for me, so thank you for making this video!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻😍♥️

I am working in a very similar way and at the moment I am a bit stuck in my painting progress because for first time I am working on a 120 cm per 80cm canvas. On a small piece it’s much easier to find the right way for a composition… it’s also easier to change if I don’t like it….what would you recommend for a big canvas?
@PaintedPaperStudio
4 ай бұрын
Oh my goodness, DeSabin - that is a very large piece you are working on ! I have a couple ideas. If you are working against a wall, you could try using a little artist tape (or sticky glue dots) on the back of your collage pieces, arrange them and rearrange them until you find a composition you like. If you are working horizontally, you could try to take a picture from above and see how the composition looks as you go. You would probably need a ladder to get high enough to capture the whole piece. I love working large but it really does present challenges. Good luck, and let me know how it goes. 🥰

Spoiler alert, Chloé - you'll see next week 😍. When you build up layers below, you don't see them as they are but you see bit's and parts of them which adds to the visual interest of the piece. It's a quality that's hard to describe, but once you see it you can't "un-see" it. Whenever I see it in a gallery or museum, I'll stare at it for ages, trying to figure out what they used. Does that help? - PS you are doing so well on your 108 day challenge 🥰👏🏼🥰

Hi Gail! Yes, I totally see penguins, too 😀. In regard to layering, (usually) if I fall in love - truly in love - with a layer, I won't cover it - at least not all the way. I make a lot of my creative decisions based on how I *feel*. It's my barometer when creating. The more you create, the more you will trust your creative senses, and covering up layers (if that's what you want to do) won't be hard. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. 🥰

Hi Susan, I'm so happy you're here and that you watched the video. The short answer is that the exercise was twofold - practicing composition and training my body to recognize what feels good to me while I create. The longer answer is that there are very few of the papers that I create that I consider precious - for me, the art creation happens in the moment - from the feeling I get when I paint a single piece of paper. Sometimes I'll add that piece to a collage or painting so that everyone can see it. Other times, it is buried beneath other papers or paints, never to be seen by anyone but me - and I am ok with that. The focus of this exercise was practicing, experimenting, and exploring composition to train my creative brain to recognize what looks and feels good to me. It's also what I encourage others to do when creating. I love questions like this because it gives me an opportunity to try to explain what it feels like for me to create. Thank you for asking. 🥰

Hi Karen, I'm so glad you're here and what a great question! I don't know how it is with other creatives, but I keep going until it makes me feel happy. I'm not being flippant, I mean when I literally experience the feeling of joy in my body and my brain tells me to stop. Sometimes I go too far, which doesn't feel good. When that happens I tend to walk away for a time. Sometimes that's a day or two, sometimes it's years. Other times I cover it up and start over, which makes me happy. I'm not precious with anything I work on until I feel that joy. Such a great question - thank you for asking. 🥰

I just don't understand the layering of all those different (and to me, precious and lovely) papers, if they aren't exposed to any degree by sanding away or any other process, at the end. To me it seems a waste of something that was created but will never be seen. I totally DO understand it if they are exposed somehow through the process or at the end. But if they aren't going to be, couldn't you just layer with plain paper to get your texture?
@PaintedPaperStudio

Hi Cat, I'm so happy you're here and that you watched the video. I have a little different spin on this. There are very few of the papers that I create that I consider precious - for me the art creation happens in the moment - from the feeling I get when I paint a single piece of paper. Sometimes I'll add that piece to a collage or painting so that everyone can see it. Other times it is buried beneath other papers or paints never to be seen by anyone but me - and I am ok with that. The focus of this exercise was practicing, experimenting and exploring composition to train my creative brain to recognize what looks and feels good to me. It's also what I encourage others to do when creating. You are absolutely right, I could have stacked plain papers to get the décollaged and sanded look. But where would the fun be in that? Thank you for the tutorial, Jackie! I have a beginner question regarding layering. I see so many artists creating a nice layer and then covering it completely. Why is that? My silly thoughts are like... if you're going to cover it, then why make it pretty? Thank you again :)
@PaintedPaperStudio
5 ай бұрын
Great question, Suzanka! There are many different reasons and I can't speak for other artists, but I create layer after layer to make background texture for the piece I'm working on. Sometimes, the collage or painting does not cover everything below it, so you get a sense of history. In this video I was simply doing an exercise in practicing composition - not creating a finished piece of art. We can only get better by practicing. Many people practice composition in their sketchbooks, which is great. Today I chose to practice it while building up layers. Does that help? 🥰

So much fun to watch :-) So you spritz all the pieces before adhering them?
@PaintedPaperStudio
5 ай бұрын
Hi Robin! No, I din't spritz all of them. I spritzed all the papers that I knew would go transparent with the gloss medium (from last week's video). The other papers that I spritzed were ones that I knew would get super wrinkly when glued down. The moisture relaxes the fibers in the paper and there's less wrinkling. Heavier papers typically don't need the spritz. Does that help? 🥰

Hello, technique question- i notice that you sprayed some of the papers with water before you adhered it on that first layer. Did you spray all of them, and if not, why did you spray the ones that you did? Thanks! 🎨👩🏻🎨
@PaintedPaperStudio
5 ай бұрын
Great question, Susan! I did spray some, but not all. Sometimes I spray with water so the paper fibers expand before I glue them down - it helps to prevent the wrinkling that can occur when collaging. Some papers are thicker or heavier and may not need the moisture to relax the fibers. I will (almost) always spray any paper that will be translucent or transparent when it is glued down - I just think it helps. You can see that in last weeks video kzitem.info/news/bejne/x2iF3GSqnoaFjKg Thank you so much for watching. 🥰

Hi Taylor - this is such a great question, and one I can hardly do justice to in answering. Generally, composition is considered as the arrangement of elements within a work of art - but that probably doesn't help that much. The video I'm linking to here (not mine) does a great job of explaining composition, and I think it may help. Please let me know if it does. 🥰 kzitem.info/news/bejne/1a-YnKZmrJeci4osi=SZGJ4NjJE--vh-3E

Hi! I'm new to your channel, and my love of collage brought me here. I have a question. On one of the pieces you mentioned that you were going to put a liitle bit of oil pastel on it. Will that end any further work on the piece cuz of the oil over acrylic but not acrylic over oil? And also will you be fixing the oil pastel? Thanks in advance! 😊
@PaintedPaperStudio
5 ай бұрын
Hi Pam - great question! It is not going to end the piece, and in fact it will help the excavation stage (next Saturday's video). If this were going to be a nearly-done piece I would not be able to go over it with more acrylics and expect them to adhere. In this case the oil pastels are serving (somewhat) as a colorful resist. Thank you for watching! 🥰

Some may not find the layering part useful, but it is a fantastic way to stretch your talents and learn new things without the pressure of doing it "right" or "perfectly." Why were you spraying your paper at beginning ??
@PaintedPaperStudio
5 ай бұрын
Hi Cinnamon!
