Hey everyone! Thanks for being here. Here's the link to the PDF followed by an in-depth description of what this practice is all about:

This practice is designed to get you thinking harmonically and build different relationships within the framework of the three triad shapes.
What's cool about this approach to triads is it gives you an anchor note. By having an anchor note, you force yourself to know what triads use that note. There are only ever three major triads that share a common tone, and on any given set of three strings, there are only three different triad shapes.
In the first example, I'm playing a C/G triad, which is C in its 2nd Inversion. Followed by F/A, which is F in 1st Inversion. Followed by Ab in root position.
As a reminder, a triad is a three-note chord. We're working with major triads here which consist of the 1, the 3, and the 5. The root note is the 1 and that tells us where we're starting from. The third of the triad - which informs if the triad is major or minor - is the 3rd degree away from the root, hence "the 3." And the last note of the triad is the 5, which is the 5th degree away from the root, hence "the 5."
In a C Major triad the notes are C, E, and G because a C major scale is C, D, E, F, G, A, and B. C = 1, E = 3, and G = 5
And the positions are as follows:
Root Position = Root note of the chord in the bass/the lowest note. And, in our case, the note we're playing on the D string
1st Inversion = the 3rd in the bass instead of the root note. The order then becomes 3 - 5 - 1
2nd Inversion = the 5th in the bass instead of the root. The order then becomes 5 - 1 - 3
Practice tips:
- Pick a spot and work through all three notes before moving on to a new spot
- Say the name of the triad out loud
- Say the names of the notes out loud
- Find a song you love and use triads to play along even if - maybe even especially if - the song uses predominantly open chords
- Play through all three positions with this approach for any given song
- Have fun with this game!
