Parallel Session 41, Bio-based concepts inspiring the spatial structures and architecture of the next generation (WG 12)
Robin M. Harrison and Mohammad Bolhassani (City College of New York) present their work on gridshell dwellings.
In the past fifty years, numerous elastic timber gridshells have been built, however, very few have been designed to support a controlled dwelling space. Although these structures are extremely efficient and aesthetically attractive, several difficulties in design and construction almost always relegate their use to experimental pavilions rather than livable spaces. These difficulties can be addressed through pragmatic design and detailing solutions to reduce the complexity and cost of timber gridshell construction. The video explores a new method for form finding of enclosed gridshell structures. It also outlines an approach to designing and fabrication detail elements.
