Thankfully, you showed the proper name for the invasive, White Sweet Clover. There is actually a native Prairie White Clover.

I just came across you channel and you have a beautiful property! I have a question, if the goldenrod, clover and Queen Anne’s Lace isn’t native to your area, how does it get there? Bird droppings etc.? Since I live in an urban area I have never had to think about it.

Hello Christi and Welcome!! All states if lots of non native plants. Seeds from plants can blow in be dropped by birds or in some cases be dormant in the soil until conditions are right and then it explodes. Unfortunately it’s such a big area and weeding is almost impossible. Goldenrod is native but it’s a thug and I hate it. It’s winning this fight ☹️

My wife an I have a similar size acreage, with a little more feild then woods than you have and have started doing this type of restoration. We have have a 3000sq foot area and last year was the Second year and we really liked the look of it. Our acreage was bought from someone who mowed it all very short. Letting it grow up that last several years we have alot of invasives like queens anne lace and lespedeza. How did you prep your soil for restoration. Did you use herbicides or was the tilling and previous tillage from farming reduce your invasives and weed bank enough to start. I like your prairie alot.

Hello Nathan. Yes the years this was farm land did indeed keep the invasives down. Our prairie is about 27 years old and unfortunately there was a period of time where we did not pay enough attention to it and Queen Ann’s Lace and Canadian Goldenrod have become a problem. We are now actively TRYING to eliminate or reduce it. As you know it’s an ongoing process. So far we have used cutting or pulling practices to try to reduce its footprint as we have so much other natives we hate to use herbicides. This coming year there is a patch I might spray and just kill everything and then replant with natives. See how that works. I’ll continue to pull and cut of course in the other areas. I feel like I’ll always need to fight this stuff. 😬 Good luck to you and your wife with your prairie. Keep me posted on how it’s coming along!!
