A proxy war is a conflict in which two opposing powers use third parties as substitutes for fighting each other directly. In a proxy war, one power supports a certain group, which acts on their behalf to fight against another power that supports a different group. These third-party groups can be militias, rebel groups, or even entire governments that have been given military and financial support by external powers.
Proxy wars are often fought in regions where the opposing powers have a strategic interest, but a direct confrontation between them would be too risky or costly. Such conflicts may also be initiated by one power to destabilize or overthrow a government that is seen as a threat, or to assert control over a particular region.
Proxy wars have been a common feature of international politics, especially during the Cold War era when the Soviet Union and the United States used third-party groups to fight for their interests. The Vietnam War and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan are examples of proxy wars fought during this period.
Today, proxy wars continue to occur in different parts of the world, and they often have devastating effects on the populations caught in the middle of these conflicts.
