I have a no show professor for my obscenely expensive University of Nebraska class and your videos have been a godsend while I teach myself this miserable Pearson online textbook. I wish I could give you all that wasted tuition money instead.

I literally never leave comments but I HAD TOO. My teacher explained this in a lecture and I DID NOT get but as soon as I get on your channel I get it immediately. I’m literally READY to take a test on this subject now lol Thanks a lot, i hope to teach math as easily as you. God bless you.😊

If you just have degree and minutes then do you just divide by 60 and add it on after the decimal point?

Hi there! When we convert from DMS to decimal, we divide the S by 3600. However, when converting decimal to DMS, you wrote that we only multiply the S by 60. Is this true? Why would it not be the 3600? Sorry, am trying to use these little nugget videos to teach myself calc in my free time. :) thanks!!

Okay but Longitude and Latitude only goes to 180 west or 180 east and 90 north and 90 south. How do you convert a location in Decimals to degrees minutes and seconds?
@MySecretMathTutor
5 жыл бұрын
Hi Troy. Great question, let's see if I can help out. Using Longitude and Latitude we get a location on a sphere. It does this by describing two angles. One angle from the equator and a second angle from the prime meridian. This means if your location is described in a decimal format, then you can change both angles to degrees. We can also use the words west, east, north, or south to help us determine which way the angle is going, although some like to use negative sings to determine this. Example: London is located at 51.5074 degrees N and 0.1278 degrees W Converted: London is located at 51 degrees, 30 minutes, 27 seconds North, and 0 degrees, 7 minutes, 40 seconds West (rounded) Or using negatives: London is located at 51 degrees, 30 minutes, 27 seconds, and negative 0 degrees, 7 minutes, 40 seconds Hopefully that helps out. :^D

I completely understand how to do it but why? Why is 1 degree equal to 60 seconds? How is an angle measure converted to a unit of time?

My calculator (Casio fx-991MS) tells me that 6 / 3600 = 1.66 Any thoughts on this?
@MySecretMathTutor

It looks like you calculator is displaying the scientific notation. With these calculators you should see a little x10 with an exponent of -3 like this... 1.66x10^-3 This is the same as 0.00166

@@MySecretMathTutor Ah, thank you very much for the reply. I will look into whether or not it is possible for me to change my calculators notation. I'd like to thank you for your channel and videos. They have been tremendously helpful to me! Much appreciated.

I don't understand, for some reason whenever I try to convert minutes to degrees I do it just like you say, dividing it by 60, but even when I do it with a calculator my answers never come out right. I always get the answers wrong according to my online homework :/
@StefanySmith
8 жыл бұрын
+yourfriendthemoose Your textbook answer key might be using the cheats for this. Try dividing the seconds by 60, then adding the minutes, and divide by 60 again, then add to the degrees. This is a "trick" that works most of the time, but because of rounding errors, isn't as accurate as the method described in this video.
