Great first episode! Your drawings look really good for beginning. I had tried to teach myself but would get frustrated and quit for a few years. Then try again, frustrated, quit. Then I heard something that helped. There are 3 kinds of learners: 1st: always draws better than they see so they don’t get frustrated and continue to grow. 2nd: starts out drawing better than seeing, but then seeing surpasses their drawing skills and they feel like their getting worse and get frustrated. If they keep drawing, they’ll soon draw better than see and will continue to grow. Repeat. 3rd: always sees better than they draw so are constantly frustrated. So it’s important for this group to keep all their work to see the growth. This is me. I think it might be because I did photography for years before drawing. Just something to keep in mind if you feel frustrated in the process of learning to draw what you see. Looking forward to the whole series. I might join along but am trying to ready my house to move. What a process!!

OK that's really interesting and puts some things into perspective for me. As a kid I was in the 3rd category (especially when drawing from memory/imagination) which felt so disappointing and it stopped me pretty much altogether. Then I discovered I was fairly good at copying, so as long as I was working from an example I would be fairly satisfied with the result (2nd category). But never really put the time into improving, because I always got bored (and I think this will be my biggest obstacle with this book - sure I know I can DO it... but WHY if the result doesn't really fit into what I want to achieve with my art.. and if the process feels boring..). For now I'm happy to continue, setting the time limit (1 hour a week) makes it easier to do and keep going. Good luck with your house move!

So interesting Iris! Thank you for doing this. I am going to follow along with you before I invest in the book. I’d like to share with you one little tip I’ve learned along the way. Sometimes when we’re doing the individual exercises, it’s hard to see how it will benefit our process. It’s not until the end that we can fully asses how the book has informed/affected our art. Enjoy! I’ll definitely be watching along💗

I have owned this book for around 25 years, and am now thinking about once again giving it a go.I didn’t get too far through it last time, but still have those results in a sketch pad somewhere. It is intimidating, and I take my hat off to you for sharing. I thought your self portrait looked very much like you, so well done on that! I’ve only just found your channel so I have quite a bit of catching g up to do before I settle down to drawing with you. As you said, it will make me accountable (hopefully). Best wishes from Scotland! 🖌🎨👨🏻🎨

Wow, Iris, this is so timely. I don't usually make new year resolutions, but this year I decided to get my act together a bit and made a few decisions. The theme of my resolutions is to get into previously tossed to the side desires. In every case, I know that "I have to do the work". THAT is what has been the biggest hurdle for me, putting in the time, the energy, the focus and, the commitment to "doing the work"! It is interesting to me that I dug out this very book and the viewfinder I created many years ago two days ago. I was ready to go and, here you came, thank you!! The universe has once again, conspired to assist me. I will LOVE the support in doing this course. Again, thank you!

Seeing your video triggered a memory so I went to my bookcase and sure enough ... I have the companion workbook (not the actual book) and mine is from 2002, but I have it. Interesting to see the differences in the editions right off the bat. My exercises are #1 - self-portrait, #2 - hand, and #3 - corner of a room. I'll have to set aside some time each week to follow along.

Dag Iris, ik heb het e-book al een tijdje en toen ik aan deze oefening kwam heb ik het weer dicht gedaan omdat ik hetzelfde probleem heb. The book is okay at teaching you how to see as an artist and to draw what you see but most people say that after you've worked through it this book hinders you as an artist and that it will hold you back. Because you have to learn how to draw through the fundamentals basically understanding shape and forms . it would be better after you've read this to pick up books by Andrew Loomis or Anatomy by Michael Hampton they teach you the concepts how to draw without needing to look at anything

I bought this for T a while back but never considered going through it myself. Are all the exercises for faces? Is that a dumb question since there’s a portrait on the cover of the book?
@iris-impressions-art
2 жыл бұрын
Not everything is about faces, but I do think it picks faces / human form for most examples, because they are considered 'hardest', and the principles of seeing/drawing are the same irrespective of what one is drawing. Personally I'm happy about that because when I tried to sketch a teacup at a cafe yesterday I was bored out of my mind haha.

Hi Iris! Although I haven't read the book. I. have played around with the concept of drawing with my non-dominant hand using my right brain,,,and although it is definitely challenging, have discovered that I draw much nicer softer pictures with my left hand. It was a bit shocking really, because in real life my left hand doesnt work real well...so I find this process pretty fascinating. I will be following and trying it myself...Thank you! Your efforts are lovely btw!

Wow that is super interesting to hear. I find with my left hand I don't have the control (hand eye coordination really) for drawing, but I do love it for deliberately getting wonky or wobbly lines. Glad to hear you'll be following along!
