Charles Slater and I have been friends for 20 years or more here in Bowral in the Southern Highlands of NSW. Charles spent many years of his life being a projectionist in cinemas, he was actually projecting Star Wars at the movies down in Wollongong where I grew up in 1976, the first occasion I was allowed to go to watch a picture WITHOUT my parents. What an experience that was, Star Wars at the movies in 1976, I was 11, completely blown away by that film of course, amazing memories. So there you go, Charles was in the projection box that night making the magic happen and we happened to make that connection decades later when we met in the Highlands in the early 2000's.
Anyway, this is a short film Charles made in the late 1980's about another musical member of the Powell family, James Powell, my father's brother. Charles had a copy on an old Sony video format called U-matic (aka 3⁄4-inch Type E Helical Scan or SMPTE E video format, we used to use it at Capital 7 when I worked there in the early 80's in Canberra!) Charles found this old U-matic master tape the other day (March 2024) during a cleanup of his shed (where he stores an awesome colletion of old projection stuff dating back to the early days of film, amazing!) and I happened to know someone who could still transfer the U-matic format to a digital mp4 file (nice clean transfer, thank you Anton!). So, here it is on KZitem for the first time! Watch the show for more information, nice one Charles!
Cheers,
Darren Powell
