Europe Pre-Roman 2: The Celts
History of Europe, summary
Were the Celts really there? The truth is that it is not known whether they were a group homogeneous enough to consider the Celts as their own cultural identity, since they were very divided. In France the Gauls settled, in Italy tribes such as those of the boios or senones, in England the Britons and in Ireland the goidelos.
From Hallstatt to La Tene, the Celts spent very complicated periods, especially those related to their conquest by Rome. His first confrontations took place in Hispania, with people like Viriato and Corocotta fighting against Caesar, Augustus and other Roman leaders. Also the War against Gaul aupó to Gaul leaders like Vercingétorix, and in Britania to Boadicea.
What little we know of their culture has survived in small parts of Ireland, thanks to monks Christianized by St. Patrick before the invasions of Angles and Saxons. But even so, much of their culture is shrouded in mystery.
