Thanks for the generator tutorial. But mostly, thanks for confirming my feelings about loud motorcycles that continually drive through my neighborhood without the slightest bit of respect for whether I'm asleep or awake. I like the sound of a well running engine as much as anybody but geesh!

I doubt they are legal. There is a 100dB limit on the noise for motorcycle mufflers. They just cheat and swap them out for the inspection. The Police don't enforce it as far as I know. What's that joke about Harley-Davidsons - turning petrol into noise without the inconvenience of horsepower.

@ 5:00 carbon on the commutator is quite normal and no trouble as it's conductive. If you're not sure of the condition of the brushes put new ones in as they get less spring pressure once they're badly worn. I suspect what you cleaned off with the spray was a layer of copper oxide which is bad for conduction.

Ordered new ones from spares today! When I rebuilt the dynamo some years ago I did clean the commutator and also made sure the segments were cut as they say in the manuals. I think it has just been sitting too long.

The model of regulator should be matched to the characteristics of the dynamo. It would be best to find out which regulators were mated with that particular dynamo or dynamos with a similar current rating in various cars. If you only have a moderate load on the system then you can probably get away with a mismatched regulator, but for proper protection from overload you should use the regulator family designed for that dynamo.

I think these cars/dynamos are early enough there was only a cut out, no regulator at all up till the mid 30s. They used a junction board (11160) and a F-Type cutout according to the books. Later in about 1937 the 9hp did get a RFJ20 cutout/regulator but those are rare and hard to find. The RB106 is much easier to find. The RF95 is the same internally I think but in a different box with more terminals and fuse holders. All the dynamo has to do is run the lights and charge the battery as it's mag ignition and I will be using LED bulbs so the lights shouldn't be too much of a draw on it.

@@asciimation You're quite right, of course. My only involvement with these components has been with 1940s cars with small dynamos where the system has to be carefully matched and adjusted to ensure worry-free journeys, especially at night. 🙂

@@mikemillen3219 Absolutely, the later manuals mentions matching them to the dynamos. I think it gets more important when the 3 bobbin regulators came out since they matched the current to dynamo output. I think the 2 bobbins rely more on the battery to regulate it's own current by trying to keep the voltage constant.
