Zenith model 6-D-512 from 1941. One of the first radios Zenith used with a new type of Loktal tube, a 14H7 for the RF. It actually has 6 tubes, see 14:05 in. The chassis is curved in one corner for the fact this radio came also in Bakelite both white and brown and with a curve in the cabinet. The wood cabinet here is actually more attractive with the lower part in a photofinish.

Tonight I went over a friend's prewar Philco transitone 5 tuber. He is just starting in the hobby, got it cheap and already "working." Opened it up to find all original caps except for two that looked like they were replaced in the 50s or 60s. Set does work... and some collector had evidently bought it already, took it apart and saw the rubber wire falling apart everywhere; slapped some tiny scraps of electrical tape over the bare wires and then sold it off as a working unrestored set to a newbie (!). Fresh, new electrical tape so within the last 10-20 years. Oddly some wires seemed soft and pliable while others were almost entirely bare and hardened to a crisp. Recapped it, replaced the worst wires and left the soft pliable ones. Will probably play for the next 50 now.

I looked up this model from the Radio Museum website, and it is a Zenith 6-D-512 from 1941. I love the wooden finish on it, and once again BT is very ideal on it. Another awesome vid from you, Seth!

That radio is beautiful. Looks like it shares the brass dial pointer with the late 30's and early 40s Zenith Wavemagnet radios! So cool.

What an attractive radio! It sounds really good, too! I'm always impressed by the quality of your work. By the way, David Tipton has figured out a way to make those yellowing, failing dials using a toaster oven and simple forms.

That's a *beautiful* set! It's probably among the very first of the AA5 design. I have a 1947 RCA that uses that same rubber wire with the old, fragile rubber insulation that flakes off so easily.

50L6 is a common sub for the 35L6 to account for today's higher line voltages. There were a few L6 tubes identical aside from filament voltages. Surprised the audiophiles aren't going after them for simple DIY push-pull circuits (2 50L6s and a 12 or 24v rectifier tube) to save on power transformer costs.

That 50L6 also accounts for the slow warmup.

Wow, what a nice set. I'd like one of those in my collection someday. I noticed something interesting; this chassis saw multi-purpose duty. You can see that it was also designed to go into their models with a rounded cabinet

This chassis is very sensitive. I've worked on a couple sets with this chassis, including the same model on my channel. They also used this in the beehive style bakelite cabinet. You can use a 50L6 in place of a 35L6, but the set will warm up slower and may be a little bit quieter.

11:00 that's half right, it's not the foil, safety caps are foil too. It's more to do with the failure mode of the dielectric

He might have skipped showing that. He will use Novus #1 polish unless it has fine scratches. Then he uses Novus #2 then #1. Good stuff.

@@wrenchhead944 The metal dial can be cleaned with soap and water. The plastic dial cover is what I was talking about which gets funky over time.
