By early October, 1888, the Whitechapel murders had captured the collective imaginations of people the length and breadth of Victorian Britain.
In addition, an extra element of intrigue had been added to the case by a letter that had been sent to a London news agency that bore the chilling signature "Jack the Ripper."
This sobriquet had imbued the murders with a decided air of pantomime, and had led hoaxers across the land to pen similar missives and send them to the authorities. Since many of these missives were signed "Jack the Ripper, and contained the ominous threat that he was going to carry out more murders within days, fear of the unknown perpetrator of the atrocities had reached fever pitch by the second week of October, not just in London but across the whole country.
Desperate to show that they were able to protect the public, the police authorities increased the number of officers in the streets, whilst the vigilance patrols also stepped up their activity.
In this video, we look at the precautions that were being instigated against the perpetrator.
