I think it’s a bit of an unfair comparison with the different tone knob settings Some people getting started with bass may not know what a tone knob is, so they may just assume that those two basses can only get those sounds

I'm at the point where every bass I pick up I end up messing with the tone knobs and dialing in the same tone I always use. Tone truly is in the fingers for the most part.

I always wonder why producers choose pbass more often than J. I belive it is because the "bass profile" from a P is less jumpy due to the offset neck pickup. Thats why I play a pj, cause you get the nice brightness from the bridge J, with the added bass stability from the P.

One of the primary reasons is that j basses typically have single coil pickups and p basses have split coil. This makes j basses have a bunch of hum between notes, whereas o basses are relatively silent. Other than that, if the pickups are in a similar location they can sound extremely similar. Oh, one is usually a few millimeters wider on the neck than the other as well, but I can't remember which at the moment.

Let’s say 1 pickup basses have 3 sounds: tone off, tone 50% and tone 100%. That means the Jazz Bass has 9 sounds, but even 10+ minute comparisons still reduce it to HONK, they just call it ‘the Jaco sound’.

Slight issue comes from the fact that you can make a jazz bass sound like a pbass. But you can’t do it the other way around. If you have a PJ, even better.

That was not a fair comparison, the J was using the bridge pickup and open tone while the P was using (as it couldn't be different) the middle/neck (whatever you prefer to call it) pickup and closed tone

I have a J and a P. They’re both right for that specific sound and gig. I prefer the mid thump of the P. You can always EQ out a bit of the mid in a My influence is James Jamerson, soul and blues.

Get a PJ bass. So a P-bass with a Jazz rear single coil. Now use both pickups, and dial the front P-pickup back just a slight amount. You’ll hear it.

I’ve found that on a jazz bass if you turn the neck pickup to 90%, the bridge pickup to 0, and roll the tone off it sounds like a P bass.

(From a guitar player, who plays bass on the side's perspective) Jazz bass is if you took the bright tones of a fender stratocaster and put it on to a bass, and the P bass has the more creamy tones of a Les Paul or a ES-335 and put it on a bass.

Played in different locations relative to the bridge, so hard to say. Of course it will sound brighter nearer to the bridge.

The Pbass does not have the versatility of the Jazz bass. With adjustments you can make the Jazz sound like a pbass, but you can’t get a pbass to sound like the Jazz bass.

Oh Hey, thanks for replying! I play a Squier Paranormsl 54' Jazz Bass. The buzzing always happens when I let go of anything metal. The buzzing also grows when I solo one pickup with the bridge on full with 100% tone. But the buzzing gets reduced by a lot when I turn the neck pickup all the way up and the tone for that all the way down. It's also the same thing but the other way around with 100% neck pickup tone and 0% bridge pickup tone.

@@athan1453 Cool bass! Love those ones. Sounds like it's got a grounding issue, can happen quite easily with the ones with the dual pots. It's a fairly easy fix if you bring it to a local guitar tech. :D Cheers, Ollie

A pj bass is better, in a mix the p pickup gives an more even bass and mid profile due to the way the pickup is offset. With my jazz bass it is much more fiddly because it is so bright and attacky.

My jazz sounds just fine, not honky. My P with rounds sounds great, my P with flats sounds great. I can use any of them. It's all in the palm and fingers.
