Migraine, the most common brain disease worldwide, is often characterised by paroxysmal and disabling pain. The tremendous disease burden is carried by patients, their families, the medical community, and society at large. In the European Union alone, migraine has been estimated to cost €27 billion per year.
Chronic migraine, which involves 15 or more headache days per month, is commonly associated with medication overuse headache, caused by overuse of acute migraine medicines and analgaesics because the patient has gone undiagnosed or has not been effectively treated.
Leading migraine experts at the Danish Headache Center in Copenhagen discuss the need to take careful patient histories, and they offer strategies for the withdrawal of ineffective analgesics and the individualisation of migraine-specific drug treatment to reduce the frequency and severity of chronic migraine episodes, potentially transforming a patient's quality of life.
