Great vid! I keep debating between quality like this and space saving solutions like a smithy granite due to space constraints. I’m probably more likely into it’s better to have a mill and a lathe than none at all. But since I do like quality too, I’m still in a quandary.

thanks for the video. i just snagged one of these PM-30MV's 2nd hand and was worried about what i purchased not having much of any machining experience and so far I'm very impressed. it came with DRO along with a bunch of tools. most of which were all still in packaging. it didn't look like the machine had even been used other than to test functionality. so glad you gave nothing but praise about this machine. sounds like a got a great deal on it. one question for you, do you have a recommendation on a set of stones or where to get them? that's one thing i don't have.

The grizzly bandsaw I had was a really good machine. I don't know about the mills and lathes
@Toolmaker001
9 ай бұрын
I had a horizontal bandsaw from grizzly some years ago that was pretty good. But after the trouble I had with multiple machine's I just don't trust anything from them anymore. Everything was a major tear down of brand new machines and replacing different components in all them. If it had been just 1 time probably not a big deal, but it was every new machine I bought had to be torn apart. I had 2 lathes and both had to sit wait for new spindles and bearings. Thats pretty freaken bad for brand new machines right out of the crate. Again my saw was great.

While sharp tools are obviously always better, I have a feeling the heavier 932 or 940 you've got coming wouldn't complain as much. Besides the weight, the columns are much beefier than on the PM-30mv.
@Toolmaker001

Exactly, especially with larger diameter endmills. The PM30 does very well with endmills up to 3/4" and it's happy spot is up to 5/8". So yes you are totally correct.

I couldn't agree with you more. Grizzly machines are terrible. If you're looking for an import machine, Precision Matthews is the way to go. Not to mention that their customer service is top notch. EDIT: Also, agreed about machines. A machine tool, especially a manual machine tool, is at its best after it's been used on a daily basis by a skilled operator.

If you get another mill try getting one of them made in Taiwan. They seam to have much better quality over the Chinese mills.

I noticed you were sitting in a wheelchair. I am a paraplegic and would like to get back into machining. Do you work from the chair or do you stand to operate your machines?
@Toolmaker001
8 ай бұрын
I've had 18 spine surgeries. Standing and walking can become very uncomfortable so I stay in my chair as much as possible. I can't stay in my chair on the lathe all the time, I have to stand for most operations at some point.

I had a pm940v and had alot of problems with it. The quill bearing fit was about 7 to 10 thousands to sloppy and caused alot of chatter. And the preload on the bearings wasn't correct.

Curious, I have a PM30 too.... What's your date code? Mine is 10.2021. I think my spindle has an issue... With the quill up, does the part sticking out the top have a slight wobble, while the bottom runs true?
@Toolmaker001
Жыл бұрын
I'll go out and check in a few minutes. So the receiver is being repaired today. And so you know I still have the original spindle in the machine and the new one is in the mill cabinet. It hasn't given me much trouble since I cleaned up the taper but after this I'm putting the new spindle in. I trued up my draw bar in my lathe the best I could, and it does still has an essentric rotational wobble to it but it's not terrible. It doesn't cause me any problems. Does your machine develop a vibration at high rpm ( max rpm ).

I was going to comment on that, no, I don't have any vibration like you were talking about, but I'm glad you mentioned reinforcing the feet that stick out on the base, because my mill will move on heavy cranking (especially the z-axis). I did buy the power feed for the x-axis from Precision Matthews, it's nice... My lathe is a PM-1228, I wish I'd got the 1236... Oh, well. Are you planning on videoing the spindle swamp?? 😉
@Toolmaker001
Жыл бұрын
Probably not going to video the swap. Yeah the stand is terrible. I won't put on a power feed because of the weight hanging out on the end of the table. I want my parts as parallel as possible and the weight will leverage the table.
