Footage of some of the predators we saw whilst on safari in Kruger National Park in South Africa. Majestic lions, sleek leopards, endangered wild dogs and scavenging hyenas. They are all formidable predators.
These four are the dominant large mammal predators in Kruger:
The lions are the biggest and tend to be the most social of the cats in Kruger. They are awesome creatures, associated with royalty and leadership. Their power is reflected by their impressive size.
The leopards are stunningly beautiful creatures and the most shy. They usually keep to themselves and are inclined to drag their prey up a tree to avoid the scavengers and allow several days of feeding.
The African wild dogs (also known as painted dogs) are an endangered species. As an individual animal they are not much threat to other animals but as a pack, they are formidable hunters.
The hyenas are much maligned. They are shaggy, scruffy and opportunistic carnivores with a distinctive sloping back. The sound of a hyena's full cry in the middle of the night can send a chill down your spine.
