Woah! Your tree decisions are sometimes seriously life-dependant. But I guess for a man who started off as a mountaineer, that sort of life keeps the adrenalin flowing nice and strong!! I have the same sense of adventure, so I love your channel. Thanks Blair.

That fungus looks like what we would call a king alfred's cake, mainly seen on ash trees here across the pond. they are good firelighters

It could be that the hardest part is telling a property owner they need to destroy a decades-old plant, tall and "strong", for safety reasons.

It was also hard because the foliage was not in decline. People see a full green tree and think “it looks okay to me”.

Regarding the hypoxylon on the coast live oak: does it cause the wood decay or does it take advantage of wood decayed by another pathogen such as Phytophthora? If it's the second, could a tree with just one or two hypoxylon fruiting bodies be considered safe?

Great question with a difficult answer. A fungal infection can be isolated but does spread. Can the tree overcome the fungus? Possible but decay is decay. Time takes out all trees.

It is mind boggling to me that anyone needs a permit to remove a hazardous tree on private property

It has to be determined to be hazardous first. So many people wipe out all old heritage trees to make rooms for more construction. I agree with the concept but sometimes governments go too far.

I need to have a permit to just replace my kitchen cabinets or put in a light. Yet the government can build a tent city for illegal aliens and NOT get permission from the citizens. It's illegal for me to have a clothes line. I am in 3 organization's. Boy Scouts, Convention of States (for term limits) and a local action group. I don't intend to bury my head or ignore this garbage any longer. We are subjects now. Not citizens.

Hi Blair, another great video. I was wondering if a fungus in a tree is always harmful? or are there fungi species that are ok?

Do you ever do penetrative testing to assess the decay inside the tree?

I use this setup five days a week. Need to open up the high slot a hair more for easier drop in but so far, I’m loving it. Setup for bucket. Garbage can vise holder is also a huge help for small saws and large saws.

Sounds fine on my side. Sometimes when I hold the camera further away from my face, it is a bit quieter.
