Explanation of the "Virtual Dog Lab" In-Class Exercise: Simple Autonomic Pharmacology
Objective: Be able to predict the effects on Blood Pressure and Heart Rate when Autonomic Agonists and Antagonists are combined.
The best way to solve problems where you have to predict heart rate reflex response after drug infusions in patients with other drugs on board.
1. Determine overall effect of ALL the DRUGS on blood pressure, regardless of drug class.
2. If overall blood pressure drops, you expect tachycardic reflex, if BP rises, expect bradycardia
3. Re-check for anticholinergics or beta-1 blockers in the drugs involved: anticholinergics will block bradycardia reflex, beta-1 blockers will block tachycardia reflex.
Voila!
