In this lesson we review dehydration reactions. In these reactions a water is removed from an alcohol to form an alkene. This water comes from the OH group of the alcohol and a H on an adjacent (or beta) carbon. The exact carbon it comes from is determined by the Zeitsev's rule which tells us that the hydrogen is removed from the carbon with fewer hydrogens, in other words, the poor get poorer.
