Paddy McAloon is a great songwriter! From the album that this song is taken, "From Langley Park To Memphis", I would highly recommend, "Cars and Girls" and " Hey Manhattan". Their previous album, "Steve McQueen" ("Two Wheels Good" in the US) is regarded by many as their classic, with songs such as, "Appetite" and "When Love Breaks Down".

When meeting with their CBS Rep in New York , The Prefabs were surprised to meet Bruce Springsteen & the rep told them they should ✍️ songs like him if they wanted a hit in the 🇺🇸. Somewhat cheekily they wrote " Cars & Girls " in response ! This is a classic song as is that .Thanks for playing 😊

I guess it follows that British tradition of eccentricity in song lyrics like Semolina Pilchard climbing up the Eiffel Tower. But Hot Dog, Jumping Frog, has a flowing, rhyming meter...

Love your reviews and don't be put off by the trolls. This song apparently is about a one hit wonder living off past glories. The hot dog part indicates the hit was a novelty song aimed at American ears.

So many great songs of theirs, Nightingales, Bonny, Ice Maiden. I would also recommend listening to Scritti Politti and The Blue Nile from that era. Absolute and Tinseltown in the rain spring to mind.

I finally discovered Prefab Sprout a few years ago and I love their music. "King of Rock n Roll" is a silly song by them... they have much much better songs. "When Love Breaks down", "Goodbye Lucille", "Cars and Girls", "Bonny", "A Prisoner of the Past"... Please give them another chance.

Ok this is there biggest song.. but I cringe a bit when people react the first time to prefab sprout to this video as the band saw it as a bit of a joke. Prefab Sprout have maybe two dozen other songs that many other bands would have died to have written any one of them. Paddy McAloon often gets compared as being Lennon/McCartney level of song writing for good reason. This is a nice fun song, but do yourselves a favour and check out some more... were talking pop songs at the highest level... just listened to 'the sound of crying' and 30 years later it's should still be No.1 across the earth every year

Looking back over your reactions I noticed you mentioned liking a few Sweet tracks, Sweet and Slade ruled in early ‘70’s being 2 fun bands, so still can’t believe you’ve never checked them out yet. Slade were the biggest selling singles artist in the early ‘70’s with 6 No.1’s, their 1973 Christmas record still enters the chart yearly 50yrs later….Cum on feel the Noize and Far Far Away being gooduns….and it’s the law if play one of these artists then the other must follow 😉🤣

It is about a washed up singer, still believing he is a big star & everybody has left him. The album this is off was called From Langley Park to Memphis. The band are from Durham which is where Langley is & Memphis is a nod to Elvis. So possibly the song is somewhat about Presley's last few years.

Hi just watched your video reaction to this song. You didn't seem to know what the song was about. Here's the heads up. It's about a song writer who for love nor money couldn't have a hit record. So he wrote a novelty song made up of silly lyrics & sure enough it was his only hit record. It's practically autobiographical as this was Prefab Sprout's only Top 10 hit in the UK. Although they released so many brilliant songs that didn't do too well in the charts.
