Dental work is safe in pregnancy, Lidocaine is safe as well. Even dental X-rays are not a problem as long as the abdomen and pelvis are shielded with a lead apron. The dentist will probably want a release from her obstetrician saying it is OK, Just have her call her doctor's office, I am sure they will be happy to provide her with a note for the dentist.

Thanks. Her dentist said elective procedures like that can be done after 12 weeks unless she is in a lot of pain. Her gum looks inflamed. Do you think 2 weeks early will make much of a difference?

Almost all miscarriages happen in the first trimester. People are afraid that if they do an elective procedure and the patient then has a miscarriage they will be blamed. For this reason elective procedures are usually put off until the second trimester when the risk of pregnancy loss is minimal. The dental procedure will not cause any problem with the pregnancy but I understand the dentist's hesitancy.

My friend is having a chip filled in a tooth bonding. She may need a lidocaine or some other kind of numbing injection I order to do this. It is about a 15 minute procedure. Is getting a numbing injection in the gum okay? This bonding chip not only is cosmetically bothering her, but it is hurting her gum.
