I wrote this short piece in 1983, on the night that my maternal grandmother died. Her name was Rita, and she was a beautiful lady of Native American ancestry who modeled kindness and compassion for all who knew her. The piece is harmonically complex, with numerous suspended chords that are ever shifting chromatically. When I play this piece, I hum along a mournful melody, something which captures the feeling of loss that I was experiencing. I was unaware that some of my humming was audible in this recording until right before I posted it, but it doesn’t detract from the piece so I left it in. I plan to expand this piece and write that melody for cello. In the meantime, here is the original in its miniature form.
