Pogorelich has been constantly maligned because of his absolutely personal approach to the partiture at hand...I just feels that he plays like a 19 century performer (I cannot proof my hypothesis, of course) I like very much this interpretation, in fact I think is one of the greatest I have heard.Ultimately music is about feeling, it just touches you or it does not...This pianist does touch my heart.Thank you!

Wow people really are split over this performance :) 1980, this was what pogorelich played in the chopin competition. He caused a bunch of controversy, causing two of the judges (including argerich) to resign, and two to stand in solidarity with her, though coming short of resigning. In classical music unfortunately, it's the most uncontroversial (yet banal) performance which wins.

Even from the opening bars his left hand is annoying. And he makes several mistakes that may not be recognized by the people saying this is the best performance ever in the comments below, but will be very obvious to qualified critics (and especially the judges). There are plenty of reasons why he didn’t win the Chopin Competition. His playing was a mixed bag. That’s the problem with him. He’s all over the place. Magnificent with one piece and somewhere very strange with next one. For example, his professional recording of the Op 48 #1 nocturne is so bad I can’t even listen to it. His studio recordings of the preludes are actually very good overall. I think he’s in the top dozen best sets of recorded preludes.
