@@Rybonator TBH I think it gets too hot to cure properly if there's a lot. Or maybe it's the fumes? I've noticed UV resin seems to get really hot and really fume-y if you cure a lot at once. I use UV resin a lot because I have never had luck with 2 part resins and my larger works always come out wonky unless I do the in thinner layers.
@leelas

@@Rybonator Half an inch is pretty thick for UV resin in that volume--it shrinks a lot and crazes like heck. Some people have had success with flash curing it for about 3-5 seconds under strong uv light (since most of the heat is generated during the initial exposure), adding another layer, flash curing, etc. For something the size of that mold I'd pour probably 1/2 cm at a time and pray. Some brands shrink a lot more than others which makes it hard to get a smooth casting, as the cured resin pulls away from the sides and the new resin partially fills it.

Sophie and Toffee actually does sell magnets specifically for these dice boxes although they come in packs of 10 I think even though you need 6 magnets per box. As other people have said, UV resin doesn’t usually do too great in larger pours. I think I’ve used that same brand of resin before and had some problems getting it to cure. I also believe it has some shrinkage as it cures which might explain the weird texture. I do really like my sophie and toffee dice box mold, but it has similar problems to their dice molds, as it is pretty fragile for silicone, and they don’t recommend using a lighter or strong UV light with it. I feel like both of those are large downsides for a resin mold, but the finished dice boxes do look pretty nice.

uv resin is actually TERRIBLE for thick pieces, it's only good in small layers. At the VERY least, it has a horrible tendency to warp and bend into weird shapes because it shrinks way too much. I've used that specific resin for a dice coffin I did a while ago. When it comes to using that much resin, it's much better to do a gentle, smooth pour getting out as many air bubbles as you can, and let it sit in direct sunlight for a few hours. (I put a clear bowl over it to prevent any... undesirables... from getting in). I think it took about four hours for the coffin to cure enough that I could pull it out safely, then another 3 back in direct sunlight just to be on the safe side. And that coffin was black. Turned out great!

I don’t do UV resin much but I do know it’s possible to basically over cook it if it’s too large a pour. It’s kinda like cooking meat. If your pan is too hot the outside cooks way to fast and then the meat is still raw inside. The Uv light is the heat this scenario, it’s working from the outside in so the center of a thick pour can be “raw” but the outside of it can be over cooked.

So as someone who uses a bunch of UV resin and a lot of Sophie and toffee products. It's best to use epoxy for projects of this size as UV resin can sometimes do this. It's where some of it will set and heat up a lot creationg possible warping or bubbles while other parts don't fully set or take longer to set. The best way I have found to avoid it is using a UV nail set up that have a mirror on the base.

You definitely want to do UV resin in thinner layers as opposed to one big one when it's a mold this big (though tbh even dedicated UV resin artists will use AB for this anyway). I've seen a lot of UV resin artists do things in multiple passes even when it's on pieces that are are half an inch thick tops, though how many will depend on what effects they're going for. I use the same brand of UV resin as you in all my dice making as well and I tend to zap the mold for about a minute before turning it upside down and zapping it again so I know it's solid enough to make sure all of the inside parts get enough light. It might've helped in this case since no light could pass through the turntable on the bottom. I am genuinely baffled and saddened by how much guff UV resin tends to give you, it's my favorite type and I've never had issues like these gfhdfjdsk

I have a cool idea for dice that I’ve been trying and it works pretty well for the look it gives, it makes a set of resin dice look like a set of rough cut gemstone dice You start by making a standard set of transparent dice with a little bit of dye depending on what gemstone you want You do all the normal procedures for curing and pressure casting, it’s the polishing that makes it looks this way You start by taking a small set of channel locks or a vice, or just anything that can crush the resin and make some small blemishes, not deep, just to kind of make it natural looking, then you take some rough sandpaper and scratch up the whole thing, not enough to rub away the numbers, but to scratch it up a lot. The secret to making this look good is by taking a glittery paint and lightly covering each face with it, then rubbing away the excess so that it’s just in the scratch marks, gives a really rough and natural look. Best part is, if you accidentally damage the dice while using them, they just look better Might make an interesting video idk?

If you were to do the same with 2 part resin and then take sections of popsicle sticks cut to the right length you can turn the top of the mold into a spot for extra resin and put in a pressure pot.

UV resin is very picky when it comes to being used in molds. UV resin is meant for thin pours, usually doming or used in open bezels. I know Sophie & Toffee have a UV resin that is meant to be used in molds, but I haven't used that yet. This box mold is definitely too big to be used with UV resin. My guess as to what cause all the bubbles is it boiled while it cured. UV resin heats up while curing and when you get a big batch like you had, it can boil and leave you with tons of bubbles. If you really want to use UV resin with these molds, thin layers is the best way to go. Though I don't recommend that at all. Just get two part resin and use that. You'll get WAY better results.

I can't say for sure, and I think others already mentioned it, but I think UV resin cures best in thinner layers. Maybe cure it a little at a time to avoid those issues in future. Resin 3d printers always cure in layers, and many hobbyists who use UV resin cure it in thin layers.

Yeah to touch on other comments, UV resin isn't ideal when casting large items. It also cures a thousand times better when you ease the levels of UV onto it. For example, I think a large UV casting would be cured a lot better if left out in the sun for a couple of hours (if the UV levels that day are moderate to high). Regular methods of curing UV resin with the lamps can cause too much shrinkage due to how quick the polymerization occurs. Edit: continued to watch the video and I have no idea why the curing didn't work! Really strange I've never seen a UV resin cast look like that before

When I use magnets for things like this I mark the polarity with a sharpie. Glue the first one in place, then stick the other magnet to it and make a Sharpie mark on the top. Then when you glue that one into the hole the mark will point to the inside of the hole. If that makes any sense...

Poor multiple thin layers for that UV resin in something that large and it should work out a lot better. The reaction can be extremely exothermic(which I don't think is necessarily hurting you as far as curing) but all that heat could lead to other unexpected issues. I'd also let that mold sit in a nice dark place once resin is added to allow any trapped air to escape. That is a nice benefit of UV resin, keep it away from light and the resin won't cure until you are ready for it to cure. So I think the next test should be done in 7 layers, R O Y G B I V. You know, just to see if it helps to fix the issues you saw with the large pour. And good luck with those dice molds.

UV resin is certainly not the best for voluminous projects. I think it does have to do with that unless you're using thin layers, reduce the bubbles, and keep layering until its filled it could work. I remember getting their trinket box back when I subscribed to it, but they had their epoxy resin at the time. Though I also had a similar experience with the iridescent flakes, it's probably because they're so light that some go closer to the surface (but I was testing a resin coaster, so I could put a new layer over it). It's good to see the dice box molds turned out relatively well though! I do fear for the redux of the dice molds (may be better for jewelry pieces than playing). Also, hi from the netherworld as I have not commented or ghosted for a while (catching up with Red Wagon Inn to hopefully be up to date by live time tomorrow).

I really should try it in layers to see if that makes a difference. When I get some more, I'll be sure to do that! Hello Netherworldling :) Come say hi live! If I see you on there, I'll try and say hi on stream :)

That pink foil and gold is a gorgeous set! I did want to ask you what style of silicone dice molds you would recomend for a person who is wanting to make their own molds. I was originally going to go with your normal sprue molds, but you seem to be usesing a sprue/cap style mold set that you made recently. Which would you say is better if you weigh the pros and cons or each style? Does the flashing on the cap/sprue style require a lot of sanding on the seam line?
@Rybonator

Honestly Sprue is easier to get right for your first set of molds IMO. It helps vent some gas bubbles that cap molds otherwise trap inside. I'd recommend sprue to start, and if you like the hobby, get you a combo mold or experiment for what you like best :)

Should take those ruined uv resin shatter half it then repour over the other half and see it turns out maybe a very light blue to dark blue for a undersea kinda vibe. I hate waste and even my bad or busted older molds I cut them up to use as filler.

I have never used anything resin related yet, but can it be that the UV resin didn't work out that good because it should be smaller portions at 1 time? Or could you in theory fill a bath tub with it and use extremely strong UV lights to cure it, without a problem like yours happening?

I'm assuming for your oversized/slightly larger dice, you have to make your molds by using dice you bought somewhere, when you first started off. Where did you get that size dice. Tried to find some that size like two years ago at FanExpo and couldn't find a single set that were larger then normal.

Yeah, UV resin creates a lot of heat when it cures so those bubbles were caused by the resin overheating. It’s not really viable for such deep moulds.

What happened with the fingerprints on the first vault? Was the resin not cured enough? Cause it doesn't look like just a smudge. You can see it clearly at 5:30 while pulling the bottom half.
@Rybonator

Good question - I would say that is a result of the 3d printing layer resolution for how they make these molds. That's not my fingerprint, but something on the molds. I don't really notice/see it in person, but the camera has a better resolution than my eyes, so it shows up here more, else I would have mentioned it

S&T came out with another up resin that is specifically designed for use with silicon molds to have no or minimal bubbles. I believe that this isn’t normally an issue with smaller molds but becomes a bigger issue the larger the mold is. Even though no area of the vault mold is particularly thick it’s still a lot of resin curing at once. sophieandtoffee.com/clear-uv-resin-for-silicone-molds-200g/
