Year 6 students took part in an inspiring public speaking workshop entitled ‘Discover Your Voice’ run by the English-Speaking Union.
Seaford has a strong tradition of promoting public speaking, and so it was wonderful to invite students from local state schools to take part.
The aim of the workshop was to prepare Prep School students for public speaking in Year 9 and beyond, and develop their literacy skills.
The sessions, run by Matt Randall, the ESU’s Education Coordinator, encouraged students to develop their skills, and showed that speech and debate are just as important as writing when it comes to studying the English language. Public speaking also supports literacy in other subjects, such as GCSE History and Religious Studies, which often require the ability to spell out both sides of an argument.
Jenny Lyne, Teacher and Director of Studies at the Prep School, said: “Debate can improve transactional writing, that’s writing that communicates information between individuals and groups. And it’s a skill that will be taught discreetly during Key Stage 3 and be developed through Key Stage 4.”
Students said that the workshop helped to build their confidence, and they loved the workshop so much that they continued the debate in Jenny Lyne's English lesson the following day.
Thanks to Matt from the ESU for an inspiring workshop, and for all the teachers involved in organising the day.
