How many times have you been to a store to buy essences, extracts and oils to find that they are of poor quality, exorbitantly priced or not available? You might have wondered what it would be like if you could make your own. Would be easier, better, more diverse and easily available without the need to leave your home?
Fortunately you can do just this. It is much easier to create a crude extract for your own use than you might think. In many cases this is more than good enough for your purposes.
While industry and commercial producers use a variety of solvents . You don’t need any advanced, rare or hard to get solvent for your own extracts. All you need to ethanol. This is readily available as vodka which can be as cheap and poor quality as you want to go.
The reason industry uses different solvent is that they can select what aromatic and flavour compounds that they want to extract. This is far more selective then ethanol alone. Ethanol is a good all round option, cheap and easily bought in most places.
The process is surprisingly simple.
Add your original material such vanilla beans, mint leaves, cloves, etc to a glass container
Fill the container with alcohol.
Shake the container to mix thoroughly.
Wrap the container in foil.
Wait 4 -6 weeks for the solvent to be saturated with your extract.
This process is good of r getting a very crude extract. That is fine if you are working with something that only has your desired flavours in it. When working with something more complex or that has many different components you need to go a step further by distilling.
