Hi Both, If you only plan to be here for one year (Therefore just one winter) I have an absolute load of winter gear (Including boots) That I can probably loan you. I'm normally running a full season of extreme cold weather survival courses here in the North of Sweden, but the Corona situation means this particular winter season is unusually quiet, and therefore all my course equipment is just sat in storage. I'd gladly rather to put it to good use and let you access it for the winter, saving you some money in the process and also being environmentally sensitive along the way (better to recycle/upcycle than buy new) Just drop me a note if this idea is of use/interest. I'm only a couple of hours down the road from you, but also easy to meet up in Skellefteå and bring a bunch of gear with me for you to try on.

I've seen a several youtubers taking on projects destined to fail, often due to naivety and ignorance. I don't think you guys are among those. Your hard work and most important: the fact that you listen to and ask for advice is what will take you through this winter and more. With that said, some (mostly car) advice for the winter: - Get a snow cover for the wind screen. This will save time when the car is completely covered in snow. And they are cheap: www.biltema.se/bil---mc/biltillbehor/bilkapell/sno--och-solskydd-2000031876 - If you don't have a block heater, get one! It's worth the installation costs. I'm not sure if your V70 is a petrol or a diesel, but if it's the latter, consider getting an fuel operated engine heater. They are not cheap, but considering how "fun" getting stranded in -30*C is, it might be worth it. And get a interior electric heater for the car. The swedish keywords are block heater:motorvärmare, interior heater:kupévärmare, fuel operated(dieselvärmare) vendors : Webasto and Eberspächer. Also for the diesel heater, check with the dealer if you need a bigger battery for it. Interior heater: www.biltema.se/bil---mc/biltillbehor/vinterprodukter/kupevarmare/kupevarmare-1400-w-2000035069?gclid=CjwKCAiAqJn9BRB0EiwAJ1SztfLDkN9EaP-dG0zzdmt-6JZR-5v1Q4WSQBN_Kdtc1K78e4_1gTxn6RoCioYQAvD_BwE - Carry a shovel and a tow line in the trunk. If you don't need to be shoveled or pulled out of snow, someone else might need to be by you! (tow line: bogserlina) - Also, a few videos ago I think I saw something worrying: a Semko-17 3-phase plug on an extension cord. Check if the cover of that thing is made out of metal, if so they may become live (due to corrosion). A 400V tickle is definitely lethal. Have an electrician change that to CEE-plugs/outlets in the future if the 3-phase is something you use regularly. - Consider getting a sun light (solterapilampa/"sun therapy lamp") and stock up on vitamin D (5000 IU or more). Seasonal affective disorder is a thing, but it can be managed! With all this said, I look forward to seeing more of you 2! Your positive energy is contagious!

Hi guys! I'm a Florida girl who has been living in Sweden for 12 years now, going on 13 and my absolute BEST winter tip to you both is to visit the second hand stores any time you are in a town that has one or several. Winter gear is EXPENSIVE but also ubiquitous as everybody has to have it. You will find everything you need and for prices from 60 to 200 crowns for stuff that would cost you thousands new. I once bought an icelandic sheerling coat for 60 crowns at my local second hand store. Now WHY the second hand store is your friend besides price is that you are going to need multiples of things because they WILL get wet and take their sweet time drying. Get yourself some snowpants and if you have a Granngården or maybe even an ICA MAXI not too far away have a look for some 'fodrade gumistövlar' in addition to whatever other winter shoes you end up choosing. Wellies with a warm lining are your friend and will be excellent around the property. I'd also recommend a shoe dryer. You'll find that at Claes Olsson or Jula or maybe even ICA Maxi as well. Wet, cold feet are the worst. Keep an eye out at the second hand stores for some winter work overalls (think auto mechanic onesie style) which will be really great when you need to load more wood or take care of things outdoors around the house. Much warmer as the heat circulates round your whole body. The other must have is some good quality long underwear (top and bottom 'underställe' in Swedish) I also live in a red cottage with CRAP insulation and here's my other piece of advice. Keep an eye out at the second hand store for RUGS and get yourself some nice warm slippers. You will be glad you have them. Best of wishes!

A must for all car owners up here are that the car must have electrical heating of the motor + the passenger compartment. Its normal for cars sold here in Sweden that they are delivered with the heaters installed. I don know how it is with your GB-registered Volvo, but I highly recommend you to install a "blockvärmare" or "motorvärmare" (this will heating the coolant in your motor) plus a "kupevärmare" (compartment heater). Choose a compartment heater that can be switched for low power and high power (600W or 1200W). The heaters are connected by a special set of cables and the connection to the line power (230 V) is med by a special connector mounted in the front of the car. You can by a programmable timer so that you will have a warm and comfy car in the morning! Typically you will have a 10A fuse so that the 1200W heater will work just fine! The block heater is typically 500 W! The block heater is mounted direct into the block (by removing a plug) so that is something you would let a garage do. Also its important to check the level of the antifreeze coolant at least -30 C I would recommend where you live!

When you've survived a Swedish winter so far north I think you should be considered a certified swede 😉 The boots and coats you have should be fine but seeing as you're soon going to be proper swedes you can always consider some Swedish quality brands like Fjällräven or Haglöfs that makes great coats and boots for this climate. And if you haven't already gotten some, you need to get a proper set of long johns and thick socks. Preferably made from merino wool. Best of luck guys and looking forward to future videos 🙂

@@NaomiandJack Don't worry so much about the cold. If the air is dry -25 is not so bad at all. -10 is actually quite nice. I have had the unfortunate experience of spending a lot of winters in Gothenburg and Stockholm. -5 here with our high humidity is awful. You won't freeze to death, but you sometimes wish that you did. I would trade our humid half hearted cold for the freezing cold of Norrland any day. It is only when the temperature goes well below -25 that things starts to get a bit hairy. But a few layers of clothing and warm socks will see you through that. It is not rocket science. Just keep your feet, hands and head warm. Wool caps, socks and mittens are cheap. So are undergarments and sweaters. You do not need to buy super expensive specialized clothes, as long as you are not planning to stay outdoors all day in extreme temperatures. And why would you do that?

I have lived in Alaska for 50 years. In my opinion, a good pair rubber bottom, leather top boots with thick felt liners are the best boots for everyday use in cold climates. They are comfortable and they breathe, which is important. An all rubber boot will build up condensation in side which is not nice when you stop and stand around in the cold. I am sure they have similar foot ware in Sweden. With regard to letting the house get below freezing in the winter, don't!!! Frozen waterlines will split. A broken water line in a cold house can destroy the entire house. It will become like a mushroom cave. I have seen it happen. It is a very ugly situation!! Be careful.

One winter I lived in Canada, and what I learned from that is: layering is all. Multiple layers are far better then a very warm sweater. I therefore like to wear vests, you open them up and voila: cooling down but still warm. You really want to avoid sweating to much, because if you start to sweat, you cool down, which is not what you want. I really like merino woolen socks(no blisters!), and as base layering. It’s soft and wool doesn’t hurt when you sweat. You stay warm, but moist will damp out. It costs a bit though.. I hope you have enough wood for the winter! Can’t wait for more vid’s, love them. When I look at the map I notice that you live only 6 km from the small village "Missenträsk". This is the birthplace of a very famous Swedish author Sara Lidman (1923 - 2004). In her books she describes the very tough life of living in the north of Sweden where people were struggling with poverty, not enough food, to many children to feed, unemployment, alcoholism, illnesses etc, during a time that now is gone. You can read about her nordicwomensliterature.net/2012/02/14/the-call-of-the-unheard-of/ I think that the house where she was born now is some kind of museum with activities for young authors. Sara Lidman lived in South Africa in 1960-61 where she was jailed because she fell in love with the black politician Peter Nthite breaking the moral law. Only after an intervention by the UN general secretary (Dag Hammarsköld) she was able to return home to Sweden. Accepting cold is a skill. Beeing a bit cold in the autumn will help you adapt easier to the more extreme temperatures that you will have to deal with in winter.

Very unlikely the pipes will freeze, as they are in a full cellar. The tyres with the best thread should go at the back, always! You do NOT want to slide sideways into the front of a truck due to the rear wheels losing grip. Also, how old are those tyres? Might be the video but they looked pretty "hard and shiny". Old rubber tends to get a certain look and hardened rubber on winter tyres is a very bad thing. Please check the DOT number on the side of the tyre for year and week of manufacture. Trust the natives! :) Best regards That dude who grew up way up north in Sweden (very very close to the arctic circle). images.tirebuyer.com/visual-aids/pages/education/how-to-determine-the-age-of-your-tires/determine-age-of-tires-2.webp

Doesn’t it depend on whether you have front or rear wheel drive?
@MagnusBrynedal
3 жыл бұрын
@@lorrainehinchliffe5371 nope. If you are driving on roads with snow packed on top of the tarmac, tyre tracks will most likely be created in the hardened snow. If the rear wheels decide to follow one track and the front wheels another the car is very likely to enter a skid. If this happens while you meet a truck with 40+ tons of timber (a lot of those beasts in Sweden)... Well, you are probably dead in the next couple of seconds. If you have better grip on the rear tyres they hopefully will be able to "climb over" to the same track as the front wheels are in and hence you avoid skidding into a horrible death. Pro tip: if you can't drive up a slippery icy road (say to your own house) turn the car around and reverse up. Works like a charm when driving a car with FWD, not a great idea with RWD though. :)

It's SO fun to see your videos! You are amazing! 😍🤩⭐⭐ I feel inspired of your greatfullness and joy to explore a new country. A little peace of heaven is exactly what it is! Motivation is key. But be preperad to stay strong in your mind. Many locals may have lost the spark over the years, "blivit hemmablind". Whatever you hear of their muttering, lett it fall of you like rain on a goose. Cause they don't see the beauty and priveleges in front of their eyes. Check out Talasbuan on KZitem they are awesome and show everyday life in a "fäbod" in Jämtland. To get a hum of how mutch snow it can fall, check out their videos from winter 2018. That year was CRAZY amount of white gold 😎🤯🥳 Also check out Kalle Flodin on KZitem, he is rough and awesome! Moved from Stockholm to a cabbin in the Woods outside Sollefteå some years ago. The first vinter was crazy cold to him 🤪 maybe you can learn some survival hacks from him 😊 And good that you try to prepare and gear up for winter! 💪🙌 My best tips is to go through scenarios that could happen. Exampels: What do you do if the electricity is cut? Heat for the house, cooking, charging laptops/phones etc? What do you do if the plumming and water supply does not work? What if the car break? Check out www.dinsakerhet.se/kris-och-krig/forbered-dig-for-kris/din-krisberedskap/ Yes the text is in Swedish but by the pictures and Google translate or sv.bab.la you may understand most of it 👍 And for clothes, layering with air between will keep you warmer ⛄ I totally agree in the comment of buying/serch for snowboard/ski clothes cause they are made for snowadventures 🤸♀️ Choose wool closest to skin (and yeah some wool itshes like crazy.. and yeah your skin can be allergic to it tho) But wool is over all perfect clothing to keep warm, does not always keep the wind away but as a compliment it is great 👌 I have bougth longjohn's from here to my children and is very pleased with the quality. www.dilling.se/ Wool sole in the shoes is smart. And space to have raggsockar! Look for "snowjoggers" or www.widforss.se/polyver-winter-black-1 ⛄ When it come to buying clothes check in secondhand stores first, like Röda korset/ Erikshjälpen/ PMU (pingstkyrkans secondhand)/ Myrorna before you order new clothing. For the 🌍 and 💰 I lived in this the past 2 winters, best 💸 ever! No more bad fitting täckbyxor and snow in between jacket and trousers 👏 www.jula.se/catalog/klader-och-skydd/herrklader/arbetsklader/overaller/vinteroverall-910674/ Almost always try a size bigger in winterclothes, ther is no prestige in getting cold. What does a poor fitting in like small or medium help when you freeze in it? If you are out long and is so damn cold you just want to take a hot shower, don't at first! Use skincontact to get circulation back. If your hand is fucking cold hold it in your armpit or someone elses armpit a while, maybe a little sweaty but it works 😊 then shower "ljummet" if you like. Ddrink something warm to 👍 To keep hands warm in glover/mittens put on a plastic glove first. (Like these: www.apotea.se/plasthandske-vinyl-large-5-par ) Then the heat of your skin wont flow away and you feel warm a little longer 👌 If you know you will be out on a cold winterday don't shower your face in the morning cause then you wash away you own layer of skinprotect. A fat cremé is a good protect anyday to your nose and cheeks like aloevera of honey cerate. Best of luck and enjoy the White gold (if se have some 😬 #climatechange) Stay safe 🥳

I'm from central Minnesota, USA. Our winters can be brutal. Usually we experience a couple of weeks of -25 f or even -40 f. Wind-chill is extremely cold. Our winter lasts from November-March. We don't leave the house during the coldest most dangerous times. We make sure to have a few days of food on hand ahead of time. Vehicles won't start unless they are in a garage plugged in to a block heater. It's dangerous to go out driving. Definitely prepare a winter survival kit to put in your vehicle. Breathing in that kind of weather hurts. It hurts your face. Your nostrils freeze. I love being cozy in a warm home with plenty of good food and having my loved ones close to me during artic freezing weather and blizzards. Minnesota has a huge Swedish community! I'm partly Swedish. We live 8 miles away from a town called Mora! Every winter we have a ski race vasaloppet. Very Swedish!!!

Kodiak winter boots ( love from Canada) Wool socks liner, and thin silk socks under the Woolies. It’s the layers that help and trap the heat . Wool insulates ( merino wool comes in different thickness... for pullovers etc.... try a brand called Icebreaker)....even when wet. Make sure boots are not too tight / loose with extra layers . I don’t know what they do in Sweden.... in Canada with driving , we use a combination of de-icer and road salt . When I lived in the prairies , I always had a bag in my car.... also, the weight of the bags, 50 pounds, helps to stabilise the vehicle ( more weight in the vehicle, helps to slow or prevent some skidding or slides on the road ice whilst driving.)

After living your neighbour country finland for 4 years and coming from a tropical country these are my takes 1. Those big cumbersome jackets do keep you warm but they are not comfortable to wear 😢😢. Better buy some down jacket with feel power more then 750 it will be written on the jacket. pair it with a good wind breaker. 2. If you are driving a lot please buy a new set of winter tyres it is very important. 3. Any boots that are by nordic companies would do good in the negative temperature but you have to buy wool socks. If you are working a lot outside you can also buy heated shoe sole pads. Available online 4. I don’t know have you started taking vitamins, if no start quickly. I have struggled more with the darkness than the cold. 5. If your car does not have engine heater install one it will help a lot.

An easy fix until you buy new boots, is sheepskin insoles, they will help in the interim. Helly Hansen makes a warm boot, my feet get very cold and my Helly Hansens have been quite warm. The warmest boots that I've heard of are the winter UGGS, one of your priorities in choosing a boot will be the sole. Make sure you buy a boot with a good winter sole. Your coats are just ok, unfortunately. I was just thinking that you would benefit from a good Canada Goose parka. Is there a way you could join them in a product promo? They are expensive but WARM. The windchills at -35C will be more like close to -45C to -50C. I'm going to send you an email or private message on Instagram with some other suggestions, you can also feel free to message me. YES re the snowblower!! The chains are good, you can also buy cleats that you can attach to your boots. Very inexpensive. Yes re your scraper and snow brush! Also, you must get a smoke/CO2 detector for your home, actually 2 one for your main floor, one for the first floor. They can plug into the wall socket, if you plan on having a fire often in your home these are imperative, we have newcomers die every year here because they didn't have a CO2 detector. With the all of the windows closed and the fire on for hours it effects the level of Oxygen in the house. When the CO2 alarm goes off, you can open the doors and windows to let fresh air in and you should be fine. This is really common with older woodburning stoves and woodburning fireplaces - something I have.

Have you taken a winter driving class? Even with a good winter car that's properly equipped, driving in the winter in Nordic Europe is challenging because they don't use salt to melt the snow and ice on the road surface since it is bad for the environment (or at least they don't in Finland but I would guess the same is true in Sweden), so the snow and ice stay packed on the surface.

Winter is coming yes and there are things you can do to make your firewood last longer. For example, every window I have seen in your videos have been single sheet of glass. In cold climate there needs to be at least double glass in every window (modern windows have 3). Other thing you can check is the amount of isolation you have in the roof and is it possible to put some more (if snow melts on the roof in the winter then you know you have too little). In Finland (where I live) there should be 40cm isolation but the more the better. Heat rises so the roof is the most important place to isolate (investigate how to do it right!). Seals in the doors and windows are also easy to change if needed (if you feel any drag).

Handling any of that in a Blizzard gets your gear all wet and you need a second set thats dry and even a set that stays in the car in case of having to dig the car out ofva snow bank. @@NaomiandJack I think for the typical person, your footwear would be fine. There’s a difference between someone who works outside in the weather and someone who is going from the house to the garage to your office. I would consider two pairs of boots though. Your boots will get wet when you are out trying to snow-blow the driveway or moving additional wood to the house. A second pair of boots will allow you to put on dry boots before traveling. I would also recommend a boot dryer for the office as well as the house. A second pair warm slippers to wear in the office while the boots are getting toasty. If no one else has mentioned it, you should also have blankets in the car in case of a breakdown or getting stuck in a ditch. When I grew up in Wyoming, the car/truck was always well stocked. BTW, I survived college in Idaho in -30C without GoreTex or even insulated boots or a down-filled jacket. You’ll do fine as long as you can keep your home warm.

When it comes to snow tires, you should have the pair with the most tread put on the rear axle, not the front. Even on a fwd car! Good tread on your rear tires will keep the car stable on the road and prevent fish tailing. The slightly less tread on the front tires will simply cause you to adapt your speed and driving to the conditions slightly more, which is actually a good thing.

couple things. the paint shouldn’t be put on in anything under 12’C needs to be warmer so just make sure your bottom section that will be in contact with the snow is sorted and you’ll be ok till next year. boots wise get the ones you would of been recommend are the polyver snow boot. just don’t think of anything else. these are made in sweden for swedish weather. you’ll thank me when you’re out in -25 and your warm. good set of thermals is a must do not go out without them until you know how cold real cold is! also cover your face as much as possible. i can’t stress enough that -25 and below hurts your face if there is any kind of wind. go to engelsons for a cover they a few and good prices along with the thermals and coats etc.

I just want to mention some of the most important things and pick up on what others have recommended - wool clothes against your skin, then build on that with multiple layers, this includes socks and underwear of youre going to be outside, as its still warming and breathing if wet - take it easy, dont breathe in -20 or colder air heavy and use something to cover your mouth and nose, your facial hair will freeze at some point just saying, icy eyelashes here you come - take it slow so you dont sweat much - buy a shoe heater - make sure your shoes has thick real rubber soles as it still has a grip and doesnt become like a slippery rock when freezing, also buy sheepskin-soles and put in the shoes - get some real "raggsockor" and slippers, your floors are going to be cold!! - overalls are great, especially with alot of insulation - make sure the headlight on your car are good enough, you can buy new bulbs at biltema cheap. Can be a good idea to change the "halvljus" to better bulbs and get some extra lights like a led strip for "helljus" - car heater is a MUST, both for the engine and inside, like many have said, you can also put a space heater(can find at biltema or jula for example) in the garage and have it on overnight or for a few hours before you use the car, this is also a game changer for getting rid of ice thats stuck everywhere, including around the weels and under the car. You dont need to have it on all the time but its really helpful to defrost, in a way a "kupevärmare" eller "motorvärmare" never could. - also good antifreeze, get that checked out - you need to "kit" your car with candles, lighter, rexflexes, warm clothes like a pair of "täckbyxor", blankets and stuff like that incase you get stuck somewhere - make sure you have lights outside, i cannot stress this enough, when its dark almost 24/7 you need lights outside, around the shed where you get wood, to the garage, anywhere you need to go basiclly - headlamps"pannlampa" is great instead of a "ficklampa", you just strap it to your head and have your hands free -make sure you get some good gloves, hestra have some good stuff, - natural fibers and material is your friends, you can even put sheepskin on your seats in the car and it will never get that freezing leather feel, this works inside too on your couch and so on, i know they sell it at rusta for example but im sure you can find some online or at blocket - get yourself a "snösläde" its a great addition to the snowplow and you can also use it to drag firewood from the shed to the house, with very little effort. just drag it behind you instead of pushing it infront of you - like earlier comments, make sure you have more than one pair of clothes and stuff you need, things will get wet - blocket, facebook marketplace, second hand shops are great for finding stuff you need, not just clothes, anything really so check there first, things dont have to be new to work great. and its alot less expensive - try to mentally prepare yourself for the darkness, its really hard when you have never lived in it but it takes a toll on your mental health, it really does. try to go out every day during daylight just for a short time to get some light in you and make sure you have good lights outside and inside, make it cozy. candles helps, Its hard to explain the feeling you get when its dark so many hours in the day and the sun goes down soooo fast. its nothing like now with long beautiful sunsets, its just gone like poof and its completely dark. i can see how much you have been thinking about the temperatures and the snow which is great, youre doing amazing i just want you to think about this also so it doesnt hit you in the face. - cute sleepwear can be something fun in all of this cold winter, also cute slippers - a warm enough duvet for the bed so youre not cold at night - when christmas comes around, check out second hand shops for decorations, they usually have soooo much very cheap. - "fodrade gummistövlar" is a winner, also you can always put in an extra warm sole - dont run outside when it starts to get real cold, its painful af and your lungs will take a beating, also "reflexväst", there are some cool jackets and hats that are all reflex, check that out - winter tights is a thing, like training tights but with warm thick isolation, thats great - other than all this just try to enjoy it, its an unique experience to live so far north with all that comes with, and it isnt forever, try to make the best of it. - like another comment said, rugs, rugs, rugs, you can layer then on top of each other, really great for the bedroom and bathroom, anywhere really - also when the roads starts to get icy and snowy try to be out and testdrive, before it gets real bad, and its going to get real bad, slow and steady wins this race. when your on ice and snow you need to make sure you have alot of space between cars and turn your weels slow when you want to get going and its slippery so the dubs get a chance to grip, maybe try to watch some vidoes on winter driving as it is so different. also try to avoind slamming on the breaks if possible, youre going to slide and maybe get "sladd" and lose control - swedish winter brands for clothes (and other stuff) are great, they are made for these conditions and perform very well, a few are fjällräven, helly hansen, haglöfs, hestra, icebug(great shoes and gripstuff), salomon. Hope this helps, im sure i have forgotten something but there are many other helpful comments too, youre doing great!!

@@NaomiandJack For the Britons the Swedish coldness should be relatively easy. I once travelled from Northern Finland to Liverpool during Winter. It was 10 degrees Centigrade warmer there, but despite of me wearing the same clothes as in Finland I was freezing to death. It was so damp and windy in Liverpool - inside and out.

I'm not sure what part you are in Sweden but I know in Finland once you reach the very negative temps you really should look into warming the motor with an Engine Block Heater before starting, The cars are fitted with this heater in Finland but I'm sure you could get an aftermarket product. You don't leave it on all the time.
@rogerw9840
3 жыл бұрын
Do NOT get a remote starter. Sweden is an environmentally friendly place and running your engine on idle is not what we do here. It's even against the law in many places. Get a coupé heater and a block heater instead. DEFA and Calix has good stuff that can be retrofitted quite easily. Edit: You'll also need an outlet where you park your car and put a timer on it so it starts up no more than an hour until you're about to leave (or do as I did - a switch inside for the outlet. Before I get in the shower in the morning I turn it on. ~30 mins later it's warm and toasty.) This will actually save you fuel and wear on the engine (no "cold start").

I was wondering why every house in Sweden was painted red? Also I thought the weather was cold in Chicago Illinois but Sweden has a different kind of cold burr 🥶. Your bathroom renovation turned out well, you guys really did an amazing job 👍 You were wise to buy some items for winter, I also have a snowplow and snow tires that scraper will absolutely come in handy in the winter for getting ice off of your vehicle. I'm going to try and find that jacket y'all brought I could use one like that when our weather is negative seven. Stay warm and safe blessing to you and your hubby.

The reason why many houses in Sweden are red is because of the Swedish colour Falu red, which is produced in a small town called Falun which has copper mines. The red pigment first emerged as a by-product of the mining. When heated up and mixed with water and starch, it creates a durable paint that since the end of the 18th century has been part of the image of Swedish style. At one time it was also popular because it could make a building resemble European red-brick houses, which were mostly owned by wealthy tradesmen.
