Hi Grant. Cal 3 (multivariable calc) is the most important. Linear algebra is useful for understanding how quantum is done "in the real world' with computational chemistry packages. Stats and dif eq are excellent, but not required before. Only cal 3 would make sense as a prerequisite.

I have the most experience teaching from Brown, LeMay, Bursten, et al. I have also taught from Zumdahl and OpenStax chemistry. Zumdahl is more mathematical than the others, which is good for some. I am a proponent of the OpenStax book because it is an open access text with a searchable online version. openstax.org/ My colleagues do not like it. They say Brown has better explanations. In the end, the book that gets read is better than a book that does not get purchased or read. Therefore, I promote the openstax chemistry (and other topics) books.

We teach it in two parts. Our forensic chemistry majors only need one semester, and it makes more sense to teach them spectroscopy because they will be using spectroscopy for trace analysis. Plus, I love to teach QM first, then move through Statistical Thermodynamics in January to transition into the traditional Thermodynamics course in the spring.

Hello, sir. I have a question. Is it possible to enroll in a master's program in chemistry, provided that I study the bachelor's course on my own. And based on this, when reading various chemistry textbooks, is it necessary to watch lectures at the same time, focused on specific textbooks and topics?

Which book is best for Atomic structure for learn zero to advance level
@dw-pchem
3 жыл бұрын
There is no book that starts at zero for atomic structure. As for advanced level, Levine or McQuarrie contain the solutions to the hydrogen atom orbital wave functions and energies with the most detail, I think. Any book that teaches the Clebsch-Gordon series for computing spin orbit coupling is good. This includes Atkins. With this you can understand all the values in the NIST Atomic Spectral Database. Beyond that, you would have to venture into particle physics to include relativistic corrections to inner orbitals, and I don't know how to do that. So, best of luck. :D

IMO, getting to that level, ML may not be enough, depending on the focus of the course. Atkins Molecular Quantum Mechanics is fantastic IMO, at least in conveying ideas and has decent enough mathematical rigour, though assumes quite a bit what Math you already should know, as for the underlying physics ... at times. I would say the problems are a bit idealised and more like thought experiments (often times) as opposed to how one would implement real computational solutions, thus, not the greatest prep for practical computational chemistry. In any case, Atkins MQM is a must have in the library for any physical chemist IMO, that is, if you really want to understand the physics driving chemistry, learn the tools of a quantum chemist, perturbation theory, understand the electromagnetic properties of molecules, and so on. I don't know of any book like it at that level. Often other texts will often put you into the realm of theoretical chemistry which is not needed for most, or you end up with texts too basic like the standard phys chem books which may not be adequate beyond undergraduate level, but it depends on your course. I see ML more as teaching the basic building blocks of Quantum chemistry, MQM takes that to the next level more intended for post graduate, at least that was the view in my day, which admittedly is around 30 years ago since I did my PhD and Atkins pchem was in the third addition, I still have it :) HTH. Good luck.
