You may want to try spraying them with a little Neem oil and liquid dish detergent diluted in a spray bottle , just a few days before bringing them indoors.

Thanks Dianna, I do have neem oil but I'm not a big fan of it, does cause problems on the leaves of somectropicals and sub-tropicals. I tend to use the dish washing liquid on it's own 😁

The Tamarillos are a terrific size, even the diameter of the trunk where it meets the compost shows how much they have grown. They look such solid plants, I hope that they do well in the garden room over Winter.

2 years old now so IF they survive the winter without damage and I pot them up early in Spring I’m hopeful that I might see flowers next year 🤞

@@lyonheart84 You know what i noticed.... The leaves from your tamarillos are bigger than mine. Not sure why. Mine did make flowers on 2 plants and only 1 plant now has 2 unripe fruits left.

Lol maybe mine focused on growing leaves instead of flowers 🤪🤪. Maybe I’d rather have the flowers😉. My winter experiment forcing them to be semi dormant may prove to be doomed to failure, but if they come through the winter i’m going to try and force them into growth early to see if I can get flowers next year

@@lyonheart84 For sure you'll get flowers next year. But keep in mind that they'll have to be put somewhere during next winter, so if they fruit high you'll have a dilemma. I'll keep you updated when my fruits are ripe.

I'll be cutting them back more in the spring if they survive undamaged to encourage lower branching although my kitchen does have a high ceiling so if I had fruits to ripen I could bring one indoors

Those have grown like crazy for you Brett. Luckily my plant hasn’t grown that tall just before winter.

I cut off almost a metre off both plants a couple of months ago 😂. If they survive the winter in there I’ll cut them back harder to force side branches which I hope will carry flowers

If it’s in the ground in a greenhouse or polytunnel probably don’t need to cut leaves off, just throw extra protection over it in extra cold spells, if it’s outside in our climate I think it will need a few layers of frost fleece to protect it. I’ve cut the leaves off these due to space and lack of light plus I want them to stay almost dormant

2 years older now and don’t forget I cut them back 2 feet at the end of August or maybe it was September I can’t remember. Imagine how big they’d get in your climate, you’d have fruits in the 2nd summer for sure. If this gets them through the winter I expect them to flower next year 🤞🤞

@@lyonheart84 1) question: what temperatures do you get during winter Time? (Highs & lowest) I'm thinking about growing them myself. Most my seeds, are Mainly store bought fruits. I end up with good success with most my seeds this way. I'm new to this type. 2) What do you think about the chances of growing them, from store Fruits? I'm in the USA, Virginia. zone 7b

In my particular part of the UK it rarely drops below 26-27°f at night between late November and early April. Daytime temperatures over that period tend to stay between 35 and 50 with the occasional colder and warmer days. But we do get a lot of rain over winter. These tamarillos are seriously damaged by light frosts but I'm hoping keeping them dry in this shed will help save them as wet cold seems to cause the most damage 😁
