We use prepositions of place to describe one object’s spatial relationship to another object.
Just like with time, we can use the three basic prepositions In, At and On. These three prepositions have different rules of usage, which must be memorized in order to be able to use them fluently.
In
We use in to describe spatial relationships with enclosed spaces:
"The hogs are in their pen now."
At
We use at to talk about spatial relationships with specific locations
"The cop is standing at the corner of Fifth and Broadway."
On
We use on to talk about spatial relationships with surfaces
"Johnny Cash is sitting on the stage."
Again, when a language learner begins to learn more difficult concepts (such as prepositions), the only way to master their disparate uses and their colloquial usage in everyday conversation, is to try to commit the rules to memory and attempt to use them in conversation as often as possible. Again, the learner should always be trying to listen to native speakers as often as possible, whether on the radio, internet or television, especially when actual conversation is not feasible or difficult to find.
