Hi, Andrew. Thank you for your lesson, it is really great and helpful. But now I don't know how to use correctly such expressions as IN the street and IN the tree or ON the street and ON the the tree because in all text books that I've read before there was a rule about preposition IN in these expressions. Who is right?

. -- It's a complete and instructive explanation. -- When a person is a patient in a hospital, or he's an inmate in a prison we must use the preposition "in", but I think the right preposition when there's a visitor of the person that is in one of those buildings is "at" . Example: She was at hospital visiting her ill father.

I have read english text and have posted several times in english forums, but i never cared about grammer. Few weeks ago i had the motivation to start learn better english with babbel and although i learnt some extra voculars. Now test result shows a low B2 level, the first test was only A2 because the short tests are mainly looking for grammer. Now i reaped the grammer and slowly i understand the grammer, but there are now new difficultys, for example the phrases people use in spoken language and also the propositions are really difficult, all this on, of, by. But i thought why they say by the river, it cant be on the river, because ships are on the river, it cant be in the river either. So the main concepts maybe are good for 80% but then there are of course many verbs with propositions, sometimes totally different than in german. To reach a C1 level you must be familar with most of the used phrases, but im not sure if needed to understand films. I started today a try, so i was watching films, i started with southpark and then i have looked several films and was surprised to understand the content i didnt have understood before, but i learned for a whole month full time to achive this and of course my older experiences with looking thematic films about chess and so on helped me not to have the difficultys i would have got if only trained with babbel the time. But now i am a little exhausted, because it feels like it dont go forward, i think learning to much can be counterproductive.

In this sentence, what is the correct preposition to use: I am _____ 5th Avenue. Thanks!
@CrownAcademyEnglish
10 жыл бұрын
Richard Liloc "I am on 5th Avenue" is the correct preposition. 5th Avenue is the name of a street in New York, but it is not an exact address. Therefore we use "on" If it was an exact address, then we use "at" -- Example "The British Prime Minister lives AT 10 Downing Street, London."
@RichardLiloc

As a research document reviewer, I've struggled with using the terms "on the study" vs "in the study." Would it make a difference if the person is the researcher vs. the participant? thanks Please explain this! why it is wrong that we say at the first semester, and why it is correct to say in the first semester you are so kind
@CrownAcademyEnglish
9 жыл бұрын
mustafa saleh It is wrong because that is the rule in the English language for this particular expression. "in" is describing the period of time after the beginning and before the end. It is *in* that period of time. Another example would be: "I made a lot of friends *in* my first year of university." (correct) NOT "I made a lot of friends *at* my first year of university." (wrong) Andrew

Le Ngoc Nha Tran Your question is a good one and I'll try to answer it: First of all, you are right: Both sentences are grammatically correct. However the meaning is slightly different and the situations in which we use both sentences are not the same. Quick answer: We use "at a restaurant" when the exact place is *not* important. The action is more important (having a meal) "in the restaurant" - the exact place is important, not the action. Examples: Situation 1: Mark is watching television at home and the telephone rings. He answers and the person asks to speak to Jane. Mark replies: "I am sorry, Jane is not here. She is AT the restaurant." (The meaning is that Jane has gone to the restaurant. She might not be specifically inside the restaurant yet, but that is not important. Mark only needs to give Jane's general location.) Situation 2: Mark has invited Jane and David for a meal at a restaurant. Mark arrives there and sees David waiting outside but he does not see Jane. Mark asks David "Where is Jane?" and David replies "She is IN the restaurant." (This time, it is important to know where she is specifically. IN is more precise and means more than "she has gone to the restaurant." IN = inside to make it clear she has already ENTERED the restaurant. In situation 1, it is not important if she has entered or not.) I hope that helps. I will make my next video next week. :) Andrew

@Crown Academy of English: Excuse, I'd like to know how to use a preposition for the website. Example: facebook, kaskus, yahoo, google, and etc. Could you help me? Do you have a whatsapp id or a pin bbm? Thanks in advance.

Sigit Purnama For websites, we say "on" - Example: "I saw it ON google." I don't use the software you mention :) Best wishes Andrew

Crown Academy of English Thanks for your answer. But, I often notice that people use 'at' for the website. Example: Check it at www.nokia.com. What's the difference?

Sigit Purnama Oh I see. Good question. Here is the explanation: If we simply say the NAME of the internet site (and NOT the full address) then the place is in fact the screen. Since screen is a surface, then we say "ON" Example: "I saw it on the Nokia website." or "I bought a PC on Ebay." If we say the full address of the website, then the place is like a house address and the rule for an exact house address is that we use "AT" ("He lives AT 10 Downing Street.") - I mention this in the video. So for example, we say "There is more information about our products AT WWW DOT NOKIA DOT COM" or " I saw it AT WWW DOT GOOGLE DOT COM" I hope this helps. Andrew

If I were a musician I would be in a concert, not at a concert. If I were a member of the audience, I would be at the concert. If I were a policeman I would be in the police station/ in the street. If I were a teacher I would be in the school, not at the school. I teach in a school, not at a school. Am I wrong?

ALBERTO MANUEL FERREIRO PEREZ If I were a musician I would be in a concert, not at a concert. If I were a member of the audience, I would be at the concert. --> This is correct. If I were a policeman I would be in the police station/ in the street. --> "in the street" is correct. We can say "at the police station" *or* "in the police station" - It depends on the context and if we need to be specific or not. Same answer for "at the school" or "in the school." - It depends on the context and if we need to be specific or not. But "at a school" is more common when describing where a teacher works.
