As an asian, we are always taught to wash the rice at least 3 times (I usually go for 5 times just to be extra safe lol) before cooking it. This is to get rid of excess starch and dirt because it hasn't been washed before. This doesn't just apply to babies but also when you're cooking rice for adults.

Nichole Israel hahah ok thanks for assuming I’m Chinese. I didn’t even know Chinese people ate bats and wolves until the outbreak. Eat at your own risk I guess 🤷♀️ these exotic meats are definitely not part of my culture. Heck some of us don’t even eat pork or beef due to religious reasons.

Kat Lucas hahaha yeah people love going about assuming things don’t they? But yeah you’re right, I’m not Chinese. I was just as surprised to find out that they ate all these exotic meats! We can find kangaroo meat in our supermarkets (in Australia) and imo that’s cray too but not everyone eats it obv.

Random tip: you don't need a separate steamer! I steam vegetables by putting water in a pot and then put a collander/sieve on top of the pot, put in the veggies and cover with a lid. Works just fine and no need for extra stuff in the kitchen 😊
@lienbijs1205

You can also steam perfect in a pressure pot, because of the shorter cooking time there will be less vitamines destroyed. Just go for a solid one, not for aluminium, that is not healthy.

IKEA has those steam things for pots that cost about $5 and you’ll lose basically no nutrients, and it’s really tiny and will take up basically no space in the cupboard (I store mine in a pot). And you’ll need such a small amount of water that it saves electricity due to not needing 10-15 minutes to come to a boil.

I'm a vegetarian who eats beans every day. I tried so many different ways to cook dried beans because I don't like the high sodium content in canned beans. You can save a lot of hassle when cooking dried beans by EITHER putting them in the crock pot with water on low (about 4 hours for smaller beans, 8 for bigger beans) OR putting them in a lidded casserole dish or dutch oven (with water) for about 1.5-2 hours at 350 degrees (less for smaller beans like lentils...about 45 min). For either method you just need to rinse the beans first and then toss into your cooking method.
@Mrs.Silversmith
4 жыл бұрын
People have gotten food poisoning from using a slow cooker to cook beans. If you use this method to soften dried beans, they still need to be brought to a rolling boil for at least 10 minutes at some point in the cooking process in order to break down a toxin known as hemagglutinin. Red kidney beans have the highest content of hemagglutinin. Signs of having eaten under-cooked beans are nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting.

Katie McCullum here in Italy, where I am . from, it is very very common to use dry beans and the way we cut down in cooking time is by soaking them for 12-14 Hours with a teaspoon of baking soda per kg, and then u cook them normally and it takes max 3 hours :) (for lentils u just need to soak them for 20 minutes)

The last baby I cared for, his Mom made his baby food and I decided to try making his food and I loved it, It's actually fun to do too! :) Another baby I cared for, whenever you gave him a spoonful of food, he would go "Mmmmm" it was so cute. :) :)

I have been blending in our Ninja but whenever I blend hot foods in the container (which it recommends not doing), they are extra hot, and almost explode because of the compressed heat! An immersion blender has been AMAZING!! And SouperCubes are silicone trays that come in multiple sizes that are perfect for baby or adult meals. Hey! In fact, spinach is not recommended for ages under one because of the high nitrate content. Nitrate interferes with oxygen transport in the baby's body. And same is with cow's milk. It contains too much protein for the baby's kidneys and too little nutrients for the baby. At the age of ten months, the baby can begin to get used to dairy products with the help of sour milk products.

my baby cousin got really sick and was rushed to the hospital because he had a problem with his breathing and that was down to the fact that we where storing his food in plastic containers and we where recommend by the doctors to only use glass as it can be sterilized unlike plastic
@chel-lalasveganmania

That mold is silicone, you pop it out and repackage after its frozen. Don't heat the food in plastic. Mason jars if you don't have glass for frozen foods works well. If you prefreeze food and then add it to glass the jars don't crack as the food expands when freezing.

What about plastic bottles
@chel-lalasveganmania
3 жыл бұрын
@@eminemilly Heating food in any kind of plastic is bad. Even BPA free plastic. However plastic bottles can easily be sterilized. Just use the same bottle baths they use for baby milk bottles. If you read Catchmeifyoucan's comment the problem was with sterilizing. There are several kinds of soaks in which you can properly soak plastic containers. Old plastic should not be used for children. Just remember that when you heat food, take it out of the plastic, put it in: pottery, or ceramics, or porcelain, or stainless steel to heat.

@Loeppkyslife This was a super great and informative video! It looks like Theo will grow up strong and healthy with that diet! As a food scientist I just want to add that frozen fruit really should be cooked before eating, especially when it’s for babies, but also for children, pregnant women and the elderly. In Europe every bag of frozen fruit already has this warning, and the FDA is currently looking into changing the recommendation. Cooking the berries will kill the potential norovirus and hepatitis A that can be found in frozen berries. This is not to scare or guilt you, merely a wish for you and your children to be extra safe!

You mention some people starting their babies on rice cereal. Just a heads up for anyone doing that - rice cereal has notably high levels of arsenic. Rice naturally absorbs arsenic as it grows. This is why it's important to rinse rice until the water runs clear before cooking it. However, rinsing is not really an option with rice cereal. This isn't to say you shouldn't give your baby rice cereal, but you want to make sure you're giving them lots of other stuff, too.

She said yogurt is great for any age, but that’s only true if you get the yogurt from the baby section, which has no dairy. Their stomachs can’t handle milk until age 1, and at that point I tend to do a slow introduction by adding an oz a week to the bottle of breast milk, (so first week 1oz, second week 2oz, etc.) until you can safely completely switch over to milk if you want. You can probably do the same by adding that much cow’s milk to their food instead. I’ve also heard that goat’s milk is good for if they turn out to have sensitivities to cow’s milk. For teething, consider making breast milk popsicles. For freezer storage, the Souper Cubes MyMilk Trays have been a game changer for me. Once you don’t need them for breast milk, you can use them for ice cubes or something else, so it’s a worthy investment, especially since they hold half oz portions. I also use mine to make copycat Starbucks green tea frappes!

You could use ice cube trays to pour the baby food in molds.

Raw spinach will compromise the nutrients of everything you mix with it. The oxalates in raw spinach block from absorbing pretty much all your essential minerals. It’s best to sauté it over steam. And make sure you cook your beans very well. Lectins also damage the digestive system and lectins block also. Before you attempt to absorb magnesium you need boron first and to absorb calcium you need magnesium partially absorbed

Sometimes chickpea skins can cause babies to become very gassy so a good tip is to add a teaspoon of baking soda to your chickpeas while soaking them (pre cooking) it makes them very easy to peel and theyll just cook much faster in general.
