The gauntlet sounds almost exactly like DCC's character funnel, which is a lot of fun!

We will be wrapping up our Curse of Strahd campaign in the next couple of months, and I'm really looking forward to trying a Shadowdark campaign (or at least 5e heavily modified by Shadowdark). Your videos have convinced me to buy Shadowdark and support it - thanks for all you do!

Played Shadowdark again yesterday. I really enjoy it and I am suprised how much more you get done compared to 5e. We had a session with exploriation, combat and RP and it was great! Looking forward to your session recap! :)

Love this video, great way to combine OSR with modern sensibilities. I think I want to run this exact thing. I'll grab the zine Friday.

The Ritual is amazing. It's one of my first recommendations whenever someone asks for a horror movie.

So happy to see games like Shadowdark taking the OSR mainstream. I’ve played a bunch of OSR, a bunch of modern systems like Pathfinder, but OSR is just so much fun. There isn’t a wrong way to play D&D, but every group should at least try this style of play. Shadowdark, Dungeon Crawl Classics, Swords and Wizardry… it’s just good stuff all around.

I think the ironic thing is the game is generally so dangerous it's always like a gauntlet. You'll get four "heroes" / warriors surviving this only to be killed in session 3 of a campaign.

I like the funnel system better where you start with 3-4 characters, rather than one at a time of gauntlet. Saves having to come up with a “hey where did this guy/gal come from?”

Its always silly to me how hard it is for some players to conceptualize character death. As a GM, ALL my characters die all the time, you don't see me complaining.

You can't be a survivor if you don't go thru the experience. Otherwise, I survived the holocaust, 9/11, and the Black Plague. (I should write my autobiography!) Also, technically speaking, the hootenanny usually comes after the ballyhoo, once everyone's recovered from all the hanky panky and the horseplay, and nobody in their right mind would lollygag when all *that* is happening!

Hello sly flourish -the lazy dungeon master I am looking for an Isekai D&D campaign where only humans are allowed as playable races. I am very interested in finding a DM who is keen on hosting such a unique setting. Have you perhaps run such a campaign, or do you know someone who would be interested in doing so? Any suggestions are welcome! Thank you for your time and help! Best regards, Stanley Schlosser

Weird to take the concept of the funnel, and rename it.

Although the Idea goes back to the Greek and Roman militaries, and the term to the 30 years war, running the gauntlet reminds me of the 1970s Clint Eastwood movie 'cause I'm old. As a term for extreme punishment where few survive, it's probably better than the quite passive image of a funnel. There may also be naming copyright issues easier avoided than tested, lol.

Why is that weird?

@@aubydauby Because funnel is a well understood and common mechanic, and changing it serves only to confuse.

@@Wraithing Funnel is widely used, and DCC, best known example of the term, have not shown the slightest evidence they they would attempt to challenge it.

@@benjaminwenham7759 Okie dokie. But why not use gauntlet? Seems fairly descriptive to me.
