I hope you meant $3,800 and $4,200 not $38,000 and $42,000!! You Could buy a new boat for that 😅. Being an engineer on a yacht myself I’m so disappointed for you to have received such a bad service from a mechanic. Keep your head held high Chase

Nope, I spoke the truth, It has been a massive battle that resulted in us stopping content posting for two months, picking up jobs to pay to actually rebuild the engine, getting a lawyer, and going completely broke. One day when it's all said and done, I'll make a video about what happened so I can warn others. Such is life though. Education is expensive no matter how you get it. Thanks for the support Chris!

what big job on a boat only cost $3800-4200????? if you are a yacht engineer you should know that anything on a boat costs $1000-2000 at the minimum and anything indepth is tens of thousands of dollars.

@@ducatiparts966 not in Europe, to service 8 x Yamaha 350 V8 outboards on our 2 x 53foot centre consoles plus generator servicing only costs €20,000 and that’s by a Yamaha main dealer! How does a single sailing boat tractor engine rebuild cost 38,000 plus 42,000?! An entire BRAND NEW Yanmar 4JH 110 is only £15,000, and that includes the gearbox!

@@ChrisHudsonVlogs that was the total yard bill not just the diesel but I’d bet the diesel was $6000-8000 on its own.

The winch looks good! You'll need to make sure you find a way to secure the boat when it is in the up position. You'll want to take some of the weight off the winch and make sure the boat can't freely move. If it can freely move, when up, you could get rubbing that might lead to wearing on the inflatable part of your Highfield.

its really good you are documenting all of this. I am not al all a person who promotes law suits but in your case i think you need to ask the engine mechanic in florida for a 100% refund and if he does not comply then its time to get your money back via the court system. Its 100% unacceptable for you to have the problems you are having based on the fact you just paid a "professional" a lot of money to fix your engine.

Never forget the most dangerous thing on a boat is a schedule. You made the right decision to delay your trip to Abacos to deal with engine issues now. While it seems overwhelming to make these repairs in Charleston, it would be infinitely harder to complete them in the Bahamas.

First off thanks for the transparency with that bill, a lot of people wouldn’t be willing to expose themselves like that. Yards can fucking suck. I got absolutely rinsed this last summer. I had to do an emergency haulout when my mast step caved in on my tayana 37 and ended up at a boatyard who preach that they’re sailors but are really just poachers. They didn’t care to help me whatsoever as I was doing most of the work DIY. I had engine issues and called them ahead asking if they would work on it. When I got there they said they don’t work on Volvo penta even though I told them the engine over the phone. They also way overcharged me on a whole bunch of other prices and I left feeling awful. I’m a year and half into ownership and barely sailed but it’s getting close and this spring I’m feeling optimistic that I’ll be able to start the sail down to Mexico from Canada! Fuck man it actually hurt watching this video cause im living it as well! We got this though! We’ll be doing boat work in warmer weather soon!

Hate to rain your parade, but I think no one defined what B.O.A.T. stands for ( Bust Out Another Thousand). I know by first hand how costly a boat is, I must be a gluten for punishment because I haven't learned my lesson and bought another one. So welcome to the club of owning a boat. The best advise I can give is learn how to do the work yourself and helps bring down the cost of ownership. Then you can figure out what you are willing to farm out and do yourself. Good luck on your future travels.

I don’t mean this in a negative way at all - it’s probably the parent in me talking here now - but do you really think your first unsupervised voyage should be all the way to the Bahamas when you are still learning the ropes like this with docking, navigation, meteorology, etc.? I really do admire your ambition and willingness to take a risk - but you’re the captain and responsible for everyone onboard. There is zero shame in taking your time to learn! Bahamas aren’t going anywhere!
@ChasingGrace21

I think you raise a very good point. I often doubt if I should be doing this and think I’m in over my head and I am SCARED, but then I remember the only way to truly learn is to do. I know I want my own boat and to travel, I want the lifestyle. All the other skills HAVE to come. I have already started the sail and let me tell you I have made HUGE mistakes and I’ll show you all of them. I’m trying to be responsible by leaning on others to teach me and advise me as much as they can and I’m lucky to have a lot of help. I plan on hugging the coast line and waiting for good weather windows. I never want to push it. Charleston to the Bahamas can be broken up into smaller trips too. I doubt myself sometimes, I worry about the safety sometime, but I must go south and although I’m trying to make smart decisions, I know I’ll have hard lessons and grow through struggle. I’m okay with whatever comes. Your concern is warranted and appreciated 🙏🏼
