Thank you, Prof. Rilling, for such a clear explanation of the benefits and uncertainties of preprints. This is very useful.

Hi Professor. Could you do a video demonstration how to submit a manuscript for bioRxive and journal?

Hmm, ok. Thanks for the suggestion. I will think about it!

How do you or how does your lab handle preprints? Let me know in the comments!

Some comments I received on twitter so far: one on the positive side: preprints are pychologically advantageous for PhD students; and, on the negative side, there are then likely different versions of a manuscript out there online (need to curate the preprints).

Thanks for sharing Prof. R. Do you know of any cases where authors have had to "enforce" the primacy of a preprint?
@mrillig

Thanks for watching. No, actually I do not know of any such case. Not sure what this would entail either.

I just wonder if there are still disputes about primacy or whether this is a type of paranoia in academia because of what has happened in the past. Better safe than sorry though, I suppose

I had a preprint. Now I submitted it to Journal and it is rejected due to plagiarism. The Turnitin software considered my preprint as if it published. So how can I remove my preprint from the online platform? Thank you

I never heard of anything like this. However, when you submit to a journal you need to disclose that this has been published as a preprint, at least in the cover letter and possibly in the manuscript itself, depending on journal policy. And of course in the beginning you need to check journal policy on preprints. So I would discuss this with the journal rather than remove the preprint (I don't know how to do this).

Thanks, Prof., I do not think preprint establishes primacy, especially regarding a concept paper as you suggested, The question I would like to ask is about the citing of pre-print manuscripts. Is this practice highly recommended especially in a well-established field where there is a lot of literature regarding the topic?

Establishing primacy is literally one of the main ideas of a preprint, also for conceptual papers. But I do agree, as mentioned in the video, that this depends a bit on how well this accepted in your field of research. Sure, preprints should be cited if you specifically build on them in your own manuscript (and if you thus owe these preprints an intellectual debt), just like for other published sources. If there are many other published journal articles that make a similar point, then it depends on how specific the point made in the preprint is (but that is the same for all citations).

Nice talk sir, I have query, if journal is compatible with preprint and it was a hybrid type springer nature journal pre printing will affect choosing the traditional way of publication. I need your opinion to proceed.

Please always check with the journal website, instruction to authors; they are usually quite specific about their policy regarding preprints. Sometimes you need to mention that there is a preprint, or cite the preprint. This different among journals and publishers.
