I used to want to go into psychiatric nursing, I’m only one class away from getting a minor in psychology. Now I’m so so interested in holistic nursing, herbal medicine, and complimentary therapies. I feel like I’ve finally found my calling. I’m so glad I found your channel! ❤️

Curious how your journey into holistic psychiatric medicine is going? I am also interested in this and wondering what this journey looks like.

Happy there’s people who are interested in this field of work. Was thinking the same thing, wanting to help psychiatrics but from a holistic standpoint

So, what you're ultimately saying is your holistic nursing knowledge doesn't get to be applied to actual patients, but helps in your understanding of who they are as individials...and possibly helps in communicating to co-workers? Given that your setting is ER, i can see why..no one's going to bust out essential oil to help in the ER. Are there any facilities holistic nurses CAN work & apply their knowledge?

I just found out about holistic nursing yesterday! It sounds like a dream to bridge the gap between alternative therapies and Western medicine, to educate and utilize alternative therapies within a Western medicine system. I’m curious if that’s actually the reality of a holistic nurse????? It sounds like a holistic nurse has to carve out and create the opportunity to offer/recommend/use alternative therapies with some obstacles along the way of having to get approval within the medical system. I’m considering starting my career as a nurse because this sounds so amazing, but I’m wondering what its like to work as a holistic nurse and if I’ll actually be able to offer what I’m passionate about (Reiki, massage, herbal medicine) to patients.

Hi Stephanie, Currently RN (10 years experience) looking to move into Health Coach Nurse vs Holistic Nurse. The area I think I would be strongest in is teaching meditation practices to help reduce anxiety. From your experience and the little bit of info I provided, which one do you think might be better fit for me. Thank you, Carl

Hi Carl! I think both have their place (and you can do both!)... it just depends on how you want your practice to look. Do you want to work one-on-one with clients towards an outcome? Or do you want to facilitate classes, courses, events, etc.? You can do both things with either specialty, and there's a lot of cross over. I do know that the Nurse Coach path is much more intensive, and I've chosen the Holistic Nursing path first (but I've also taken coaching clients without being certified because there really isn't a lot of oversight or requirements to do so). I know that's not very helpful, but I'm glad you asked!

OMG!! This video was super helpful!! I too am an ER nurse, (though currently an ER travel nurse). I have been interested in becoming a Holistic Nurse, especially since I personally practice many of the modalities it entails. I also advocate for my patients personal practices to my co-workers and MD. I would love to connect on FB or IG, but the links aren't working. Any ideas? Thanks again for sharing!!

@witchnursesteph

Mmm.. I can see why you would think this. Those are two separate credentials, while a holistic nurse is licensed in the exact same way as any other nurse- it's nursing specialty rather than a separate designation. I hope this helps!

Any nurse can embrace the philosophies of holistic nursing, but you have to be an RN to become board-certified through the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation. :)

I'm starting nurse-midwifery school in January! Still advanced practice, and I may eventually get a post-graduate certificate as an NP in some specialty, such as women's health or psych. :)

Certainly! You can incorporate holistic modalities into any nursing practice. You do however need a RN license to become board certified through the AHNA. :)
