In May 2022, over 160 hectares of Stone's sheep habitat was treated with prescribed fire in northeastern BC. Using aerial ignition techniques, four south- and west-aspect slopes were burned to improve forage quality and quantity, remove overgrowth of trees and woody vegetation, and increase line-of-sight for better predator detection.
This treatment is year one of a long-term enhancement program to restore and enhance habitat for Stone's sheep populations in northeastern BC. The goal of the program is to treat 500 to 1,000 hectares a year for the next ten years. These locations are chosen with input from biologists, and are critical for their importance to winter and lambing habitat across the region.
Our partner the Wild Sheep Foundation, in conjunction with Cabela's Outdoor Fund have contributed $57,000 USD over the past two years.
Additional partners included the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, Wild Sheep Jurassic Classic and the University of Northern BC.
We are incredibly thankful for the support of our members, donors, and supporters that allow us to continue to give back to the resource we all know and love.
A special thanks to Ryan Dickie and Winter Hawk Studios for the filming, and to Filter Studios for the editing.
