1. Function: When Do We Use the Present Continuous?
We use the Present Continuous to talk about actions happening right now, temporary situations, or ongoing events.
Example 1: "I’m taking a selfie now, I can’t talk to you."
Explanation: This action is happening at this moment.
Example 2: "They aren’t working this week; they’re traveling."
Explanation: This action is temporary, just for this week.
Example 3: "They are going to the hotel right now."
Explanation: They started going and haven’t finished. It’s in progress.
2. Spelling Rules for Verbs + ing
Here are the basic rules for adding -ing to verbs:
Most Verbs:
Examples: "go" becomes going, "eat" becomes eating, "read" becomes reading.
Verbs Ending in -e:
Examples: "make" becomes making, "dance" becomes dancing, "take" becomes taking.
Verbs Ending in One Vowel + One Consonant:
Examples: "swim" becomes swimming, "get" becomes getting, "put" becomes putting.
3. Form: How to Make Sentences in the Present Continuous
Positive Sentences:
Subject + "to be" + Verb (-ing)
I am going.
He/She/It is going.
We/You/They are going.
Negative Sentences:
Subject + "to be" + not + Verb (-ing)
I am not going.
He/She/It isn’t going.
We/You/They aren’t going.
Example: "They aren’t taking photos; they are looking at the map."
Questions:
"To be" + Subject + Verb (-ing)?
Am I going?
Is he/she/it going?
Are you/we/they going?
Example: "Is she traveling? Where is she going? Why is she traveling alone?"
