Michigan’s Capital Battle Flag Collection is made up of over 260 flags carried by Soldiers from the state of Michigan during Civil War, the Spanish-American War and WWI. Michigan’s collection was housed at the State Capitol Building until 1990, when a non-profit called “Saved The Flags” had them moved to the Michigan History Center in Lansing so they could undergo preservation. Michigan Army National Guard Brig. Gen. Ravindra Wagh and Command Sgt. Maj. Matthew Hopkins, viewed the collection in March of 2024 to learn more about the program.
Program curator and director for the Michigan Capitol Tour Service Matt Van Acker, worked with the Michigan National Guard’s Command Historian, Adam Betz, to grant them unique access. Mr. Betz works with curators of the Capital Battle Flag collection to host tailored educational engagements with units in the Michigan National Guard to learn more about their regimental history
Units interested in viewing Michigan’s Capital Battle Flag collection should contact the Michigan National Guard Command Historian, Adam Betz at:
