STORYLINE
The governing party candidate was declared the landslide winner of Nigeria's deeply flawed presidential elections Monday as the runner-up rejected the results, setting the stage for greater strife in Africa's most populous nation.
The elections were meant to boost civilian rule and stability in Africa's top oil producer, where some 15,000 people have died in political violence
since 1999.
Opposition leader, General Muhammadu Buhari, a former military dictator, called the outcome "the most blatantly rigged election results ever produced in Nigeria."
But President-elect Umaru Yar'Adua rejected the claim, saying it was a matter of opinion.
In a nationally-televised news conference, he sought reconciliation with the opposition candidates,
"The contest has come and gone. So must our differences displayed in the course of the greater good of moving our dear nation ahead. Especially, I wish to thank my worthy opponents in the presidential election."
He also called for unity, urging his rivals to work with him for the country;
"I extend a hand of friendship to all my colleagues who contested with me. I want all Nigerians connected with other political parties to join together with the Peoples Democratic Party to work hard to work hard in moving this country ahead, " he said.
Yar'Adua, the 56-year old governor of a heavily Muslim northern state, is scheduled to take over the presidency on May 29.
