Thanks for your excellent video. I have a similar drop front desk in tulipwood and dark rosewood with neoclassical inlay and bronzes. Spent a lot of time restoring as much of the veneers had loosened' cracked or had been collected in pieces when I bought the desk. Soamy similarities, although mine is not as fine a piece. I had to stabilise some of the interior due the wormwood damage in order to securely fasten the cabinet interior. I also found the lower armoire door hinges to be nearly worn out. We will see if I'm able to make new ones of sheet brass to match. Best to you. It's exciting to appreciate the historical craftsmanship and ingenuity.

Hello: Why does the desk in your shop have stays for supporting the fall front, whereas the actual Monroe desk does not? Does this indicate different mechanisms for the raising and lowering of the fall front, or perhaps the stays were added later for extra support? Thank you.

Well many of them have a small internal mechanism (sort of bracket that holds the fall front in place for writing, without the need for visible stays...) but funnily enough the real Monroe desk was broken when Monroe’s grandson pulled down on the writing surface... I believe these stays were added to most of these desks at some point or another to avoid this problem. The ones that don’t have them are “slick” but clearly less pressure is needed to break the fall front straight down...my second Monroe type desk in the background of this video does not have the stays for instance.
