Taiwan’s top military educational institution, Whampoa Military Academy, turned one hundred on Sunday. For the first time, President Lai in his capacity as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, presided over the military parade that was part of its centennial celebrations. In his address, Lai emphasized that wherever the Republic of China was, the spirit of Whampoa would be, implying that despite the academy’s founding in China, it is now firmly part of Taiwan.
President Lai Ching-te presided over celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the ROC Military Academy. This was the first time for Lai to attend a major military event since taking office last month. Also in attendance were the current defense minister Wellington Koo, former defense ministers Yen Teh-fa and Chiu Kuo-cheng, along with Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu and Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai, all of whom watched the military parade from the reviewing stand.

We firmly believe that the Whampoa spirit is where the Republic of China is. Those fighting for the survival and development of the Republic of China and the safety and well-being of the people of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu are the real graduates of the academy. Without this ambition, it is not the real Whampoa.
Another highlight of the celebrations was the parade of 2,160 cadets from the tri-service academies and the National Defense University, marching in goose-step.
Cadets from Taiwan’s diplomatic allies Guatemala and Paraguay were also on hand for the celebrations.

I am very happy because they are my classmates. I feel very happy to see them. I’m honored and hope that the friendship between Paraguay and the Republic of China can continue into the future.
The military academy and National Defense University also formed an all-female company that performed the goose step.

The training was grueling. We not only had to brave strong winds and rains, but also the scorching sun, just to demonstrate to the nation that women are not inferior to men, and to display Whampoa women’s power.
President Lai emphasized that the military academy is where the Republic of China is, underscoring the "legitimacy" of this century-old institution, despite its Chinese roots, as he marked an important chapter in its history.
