The Soviets made a huge difference. Were it not for them, it would have gone on forever, whilst the West gave excuse after excuse. There was no free speech during apartheid. People were locked up and even killed for an opinion expressed.

The soviets used vulnerabilities to their advantage, to slowly dribble their socialist, communist regime. Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher could see exactly where South Africa was going and made excellent points why sanctions would have made South Africa more vulnerable to invasion, further oppressing black South Africans.

That is simply not true. We protested, forced our politicians and economic leaders to use every measure at our disposal to stop apartheid without harming the people that were already disadvantaged. We gave safe homes to political refugee’s are submitted funds to help built positive change. It was the West and the power of the West that changed the situation and gave South Africa democracy. I do not remember a single soviet protest, selling people weapons is done by Russia so they can make money and create unrest not to help the people suffering under apartheid. Let’s also remember that it was the West lead by the UK that ended slavery at huge cost and loss of life. Russia and the varangians had nothing to do with that either. The Soviets as you call them included countries that are now part of the EU. People who suffered genocide and torture at the hands of the Russians and that is why South Africa should support them now. You are supporting the enslavers and imperialist, genocide committing Russians. by the way in Russia today people have no freedom of speech and are locked up and killed for speaking up.

@@vincenta_2 Had my facts wrong. The _"Pik"_ Botha I'm referring to (and who you're probably referring to also) was the last foreign minister during Apartheid government, and was also the first Minister of Mineral and Energy Affairs in Nelson Mandela's. The _"son"_ I'm talking about is actually his grandson: _"Roelof Botha"_ , who was the CFO of PayPal at the time, and was alongside Elon Musk. Now he is a venture capitalist at Sequoia Capital, and was an early investor in companies like KZitem. I don't know why I thought that he was Pik Botha's son. I guess just heard he was South African and was related to him and I just made assumptions.
